HIMSS16 Day #1: Finding Community with 40,000 Closest Friends

The largest annual conference focused on Health Information Technology (HIT), “HIMSS16”, is happening this week in Las Vegas. More than 40,000 HIT professionals from around the world gather to network, attend educational presentations, and see the latest advancements in health tech from over 1,200 vendors.

Four GLHC staff members are attending the conference this year and each day we will relay and share some of our experience and our interpretations of what it all means as GLHC continues to pursue our goal of creating care-connected communities across Michigan. Read More ...

HIMSS16 Day #2: What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas? Not Necessarily!

Regardless of your opinion and or preconceptions about Las Vegas, there is no denying that the spectacle is … impressive.  In a span of a few blocks you can pass through replicas of New York City, Paris, Venice, Rome, Egypt, and Rio De Janeiro. These representations all pale in comparison to the originals, but they are dramatic none-the-less. I ventured out on my own for a while last night, just to take in the sights and sounds. Even late (a relative term in a city that never sleeps) on a Tuesday night the streets were packed, and the open air clubs were jammed to capacity.

This was not unlike the opening day of the HIMSS16 Exhibit Floor.  The Convention Center is massive, but 1,200 exhibitors and 40,000 thousand attendees have a way of filling up a place, no matter how large. Impressive indeed! As exciting as it is to see so many people and organizations working the common goal of improving healthcare through technology, it is also easy to become quickly overwhelmed by the sheer volume of it all. There are a couple of strategies that I have used with some success to avoid being swept away. Read more ...

HIMSS16 It's A Wrap

Well, my goal at the opening of HIMSS16 was to submit a blog post each day, recording my impressions of the sights, sounds, and lessons learned at the largest annual gathering of Health Information Technology professionals in the world. But as the saying goes, “Man plans… and God laughs!”

The crush of all those people together in the Las Vegas’ Sands Convention Center put a strain on public Wi-Fi access, the available coffee supply, and finding a convenient place to sit down for a few minutes. But the biggest shortage of all at HIMSS16 was TIME. So having fallen short of my initial goal, I will instead attempt to condense Wednesday and Thursday’s HIMSS happenings into one final wrap-up: Read more ...

Clark Retirement Community Enhances Care with GLHC’s Virtual Integrated Patient Record

Great Lakes Health Connect (GLHC), Michigan’s largest health information exchange, is continuing to expand its network through collaboration with Grand Rapids based Clark Retirement Community. With this agreement, Clark will contribute data and have access to the 6.5 million records in GLHC’s secure Virtual Integrated Patient Record (VIPR).

The VIPR solution is unique in that it offers healthcare providers real-time access to the most comprehensive longitudinal view of an individual’s health record and treatment history. As a condition for gaining access, network participants contribute a wide range of patient data to the database. This reciprocal agreement provides the greatest possible value for all. As the quantity of information increases so does the overall quality of the information available for use in delivering an enhanced patient care delivery experience.

The agreement with Clark Retirement Community is notable as it represents the first continuing care retirement community in Michigan to contribute patient data to VIPR. Read more ...
