May 2014

Greetings, Obertones brethren. Here's the latest:

Spring Tour 2014 Wrap-Up

The Obertones tour to the Northeast, 21 - 23 March, was a raging success. They sang and hung out with groups including the University of Rochester Yellow Jackets, Ithacappella at Ithaca College, and the Pitches and Tones at Yale. They also performed for enthusiastic audiences at a rehab hospital, group member Sammy Mellman's K-8 school, the Lilypad live music club in Cambridge, Progressive Temple Beth Ahavath Shalom, and several street corners in New York City. They also visited Boston's Museum of Science and Quincy Market. The group bonded, made some great music, and even netted $1800 in profit from this tour. Not bad for a week's work.

Spring Concert 2014

On April 26th, the Tones rocked Finney Chapel—the first time on Finney's stage for a spring show in several years. Each singer had his own wireless mic, allowing for more movement onstage and more control over the group sound than in past concerts. The show was very well attended, and the group wove the "Lost In Time" theme into zany skits about time travel (with a banana time machine). Music Director Dan Bloch commented, "This was the best on-campus show I think I've been a part of in my three years in the group. We were just really well prepared with every aspect of the performance, including skits, music, and even dramatic light cues." Here's to many more successful spring shows in Finney!

Mini-Reunion in San Francisco

Max Mellman ('13) was in town for a week, which prompted a flurry of Tones-related activity. A mini-reunion broke out at a local pub with Phil Wong ('13), Pete Seiler ('93), and Arnold Lee ('88). Pete gets the Alumni Commitment Award for driving 9+ hours from San Diego just for the event. After several beers and much hugging, there was much merriment.

Later in the evening, Pete and Max were joined by Al Mance ('93) to watch Rob Schiffman ('92) in his hit touring music improv show, Broadway's Next Hit Musical. Max also connected with Jackson Meredith ('13) and Nikrad Mahdi ('09) later in the week.

Max later posted this on Facebook: "Two weeks after spending one glorious night in the Bay Area with [Tones alumni] I went to see the Obertones perform at Kosher-Halal Co-op's Shabbat dinner. As their sounds filled the room, I began to tear up, realizing the legacy that these Tones would continue to uphold. I have only begun to understand the exceptional Obertones alumni network that exists in this world."

And speaking of 'Tones gathering in the Bay Area . . .
