Who's Responsible For All This?!

Over and over again our retreat participants ask us "how have you been able to do all this for cancer survivors - FREE OF CHARGE?".  The short answer is, "we" don't.

Wind River Retreats and Outreach Programs only exists because of the help of MANY, MANY "unsung heroes" over the eight years we've been providing our services.  (click here for video of Unsung Heroes)

Some volunteers fund-raise, move rocks and mulch, bake, clean, or offer their wellness talents. Some are individual contributors and small business sponsors (including the numerous friends who helped us with small donations in the very beginning when we needed it most).  Others simply tell a friend about our services at just the right time in their cancer journey.

Together, "we" are able to start our 8th year at Wind River this month!!! This newsletter is a THANK YOU to everyone who has helped us over the years and a tribute to just some of the many individuals who make the survivor experience at Wind River so magical and life transforming.
With gratitude,
Shannon, Dave & Cheryl

Volunteers!

Tom Waldron - On the Road again for MSTwo days, two states, 200 miles on a bike to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society during the annual "Breakaway To the Beach" Ride.

Our friend Tom Waldron has been doing this ride and raising funds for the MS Society for 24 consecutive years and is at it again this year to make it his 25th in a row. That's over 5,000 miles ridden in support of MS programs!  Tom is truly an unsung hero!

He and a zany (and dedicated) group of friends called the Rank Riders also donate 100's of volunteer hours each year to The MS Charlotte Walk, The MS 3 Day Challenge, The Pee Dee Street Rodders, The Dirt Divas, The Tarheel Trailblazers, The Mojo Cycle Poker Ride AND to Wind River Cancer Retreat Center during our "Tom Sawyer" volunteer days and as support for our annual Wind River Walk.

Tom and the Ranks are a shining example of people that believe in giving back through volunteerism AND having fun doing it.
Tom and the Ranks - we THANK and SALUTE you!!

Alumni Pay It Forward!

In May, over 30 Alumni and supporters came together to hike or run the Wind River Trails.  Our walkers signed up early in the year to "pay it forward" for other survivors and raised a combined total of $24,187 to keep our Retreat AND Outreach programs completely free of charge to those with cancer.

HATS OFF to all of our walkers and their 413 donors for helping us meet (and exceed) our goal!

Individual Fundraisers!

This is Gabrielle Haskell's 5th year of stepping up to do the hard work of fundraising for Wind River! Super Woman
In 2009 she ran the NYC Marathon and asked friends to support her, and Wind River in this 26.1 mile run.  Two years later she pushed herself to complete a 1/2 Ironman for Wind River. And this year she is doing back-to-back Sprint Triathlons!
Hands down, Gabrielle has raised more monies than any other single individual, making it possible for cancer survivors to attend Wind River Retreats at no charge to them!

Gabrielle also has a great passion to get our youth fit and moving.  She recently completed a personal training certificate and we can't wait to see the good she does in the world for our youth!

Please wish Gabrielle AND her 11 year old daughter the best of luck on their first Mother - Daughter Triathlon this Saturday, September 20th!           Click here to donate to her fundraiser for Wind River.
Partnerships!

From the very beginning Wind River has believed in the power of partnership with other Cancer Support Organizations. Over the years we've been proud to have partnered with Cancer Services in Winston-Salem, The North Carolina Dept. of Health and Human ServicesNorth Carolina Cancer Survivorship SummitCarolina Breast Friends, 24 Hours of Booty, Anderson, SC Survivorship Program and most recently the Colon Cancer Coalition of Charlotte, NC.

In a unique partnership Cheryl LeCroy of Creative Juices Consulting, Wind River and Sue Falco on behalf of the Colon Cancer Coalition have been working with Vitamix behind the scenes for months to provide 40 refurbished Vitamix machines at reduced cost to local Colon Cancer Survivors.   The Colon Cancer Coalition provided a local grant to help with some of the remaining costs and Cheryl and Dave of Wind River (and volunteering alumni Kathy Gardner and Michelle Wood) provided an evening "Food for Healing" class to demonstrate healthy recipes like salsa, veggie tortilla soup, dark chocolate covered cherry smoothie and the famous Wind River Smoothie made with kale and avocado!
Volunteers - Part II!

Michelle and Shannon at 24 Hours of Booty
Since our inception in 2007, our friend and baker Michelle Seymour has donated her time and talent to bake tasty morning muffins and more for many of our retreats...

Often we meet her on a street corner in Charlotte for the big hand off ... packed in ice. Michelle provides us with dozens of homemade garden harvest, pumpkin, banana breads and muffins to share with our survivors in the morning over a cup of coffee or tea!

But we are not the only organization Michelle volunteers with ... far from it!  In fact just two weeks ago she declared her commitment to support FORTY charity events in the coming 12 months (she just turned 40 so this is her "40 for 40"!) .    Way to go girlfriend!
SPONSORS!
