A Letter from Saraha founding teachers, Lama Tharchin Rinpoche, Lama Tsering Gyaltsen and Lama Sonam Tsering

Greetings

Monday, Dec. 3, 2012

Dear Sangha, Sponsors and Friends,

The upcoming holidays and New Year offer a special opportunity to reflect upon the events of the past year.

Most significantly, our own lord protector Kyabje Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche passed into parinirvana last December. During the time following, most of our attention was devoted to accompanying Rinpoche’s ku-dung (sacred body) to Bhutan and to focusing our practice on receiving the blessings of Rinpoche’s enlightened mind.  We miss our precious root guru’s physical presence, yet Kyabje Dungse Rinpoche’s blessings are always with us.

This year there are also reasons for us to be grateful.  Foremost is the establishment of the new Saraha Nyingma Buddhist Institute in Eugene, Oregon.  With the inspiring support of our local community and friends, and with we three Buddhist teachers acting as directors, Saraha opened its doors in June of 2012.

The site of Saraha Nyingma Buddhist Institute has a special significance in the history of the Dudjom Lineage. On Nov. 8, 1980, His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche visited this location and conferred the Six Bardo teachings of Karma Lingpa and related empowerments. Through his wisdom teachings, blessings have flowed as a great river of Dharma to the present.

In March of 2012 His Holiness’ direct emanation, HH Dudjom Yangsi Rinpoche, Sangyay Pema Shepa accepted the position of Saraha’s Principal Spiritual Director. Now it is beyond a doubt that it is our duty to come together and take responsibility to assure that Saraha flourishes. How wonderful to be a part of this.

Due to the blessings of our lineage masters, daily practice and programs have been open to the public and well attended.  One empowerment event, two cycles of teachings and two special teachings have also been conducted by five different Lamas at Saraha as well. In December we  began, with a resident teacher,  our first Tibetan Language Studies Program.

This is only the beginning of what we intend to accomplish at Saraha.
In its local community, Saraha will be open for regular Dharma practice, and will welcome families and individuals of all age groups and backgrounds.

Saraha will have an educational focus.
Specifically, we plan that programs will be available to address all areas of traditional Buddhist philosophy, practice and training, with emphasis on Vajrayana philosophy and Dzogchen teachings.  Saraha will offer a comprehensive Dharma education comparable to a traditional Buddhist Shedra, including trainings from elementary to advanced levels, and including the educational preparation necessary for entry to a traditional three-year meditation retreat.  Saraha's Buddhist courses will be be tailored to need, and will be made available locally, both in open-learning and registered student formats, or globally in  a distance-learning format.

But as with most beginnings, Saraha's future still hangs in the balance. Our intention to accomplish our goals depends on Saraha's financial security. We need your help.

With your help, Saraha will become an exceptional Buddhist educational center preserving and disseminating the teachings of a profound, unbroken lineage of the Buddha. It is said in the Sutras of Dandri that there is great merit wherever there is a place devoted to holding Dharma teachings.  We are so grateful that this special place is now the home of Saraha and protected for the establishment, propagation and ripening of the Dharma.

Although we purchased the Saraha property in 2011, we did so under an obligation of debt. Now we are launching a capital campaign aimed at completing the process of paying off that debt by 2016. We welcome you to join in this incredible journey.  The first milestone, to raise $15,000 by January 5, 2013, is already at hand, and is crucial in securing the future of Saraha.  We need to complete this obligation in order to keep our agreement with the lender.

This can be accomplished easily if enough with your help, if you are able. For example, with just one hundred and fifty donors offering at $100 each, we will meet this milestone in the next 25 days!
Saraha is a tax-exempt, non-profit religious organization, which can offer tax-deductions for your kind donation. Please take advantage of this opportunity to help ensure that Dharma activity at Saraha will continue for future generations. Every penny you give will make a difference and will be appreciated from the bottom of our hearts.

Please click here to make your donation, through secure Paypal electronic transfer directly to Saraha online. Or, if you prefer, please send a check directly to Saraha at our mailing address of

Subsequent milestones along Saraha's financial path are to raise $50,000 by March 25, 2013, and $65,000 each year to complete the mortgage obligation by the end of 2016.

Until all beings achieve enlightenment the work of the Bodhisattva must continue.  It is only through study and practice that we achieve both immediate and long-lasting happiness.  It is with hope for the enlightenment of all beings and heart-felt gratitude for your generosity of spirit that we ask for your support during this critical phase of Saraha’s birth.

Every gift counts.  Every gift has a positive impact.  Now and for years to come, may your happiness and spiritual practice ripen as we join together in Guru Rinpoche’s single mandala.
