I’m going to shout it from the mountain tops, women are awesome and I’ll tell you why. I’m not generalizing - I know not all women can carry that title . . . but the ones in my universe can. The ones I’ve been lucky enough to meet or be introduced to all have a touch of their own magic, which is contagious and self-esteem boosting. However, they all seem to suffer from one thing
. . . time-famine. Now I know most successful people suffer from this, but the female suffers the most and that’s because she’s still seen by her partner and her children as super woman.

It’s unbelievable that in twenty-first century UK, women are still expected to do it all. One of my colleagues told me her husband expects her to cook seven days a week despite the fact she works anything between eight and ten hours per day, and he gets home at least an hour before her. And she does it. She plays super woman.

She has three iPhones, (I call them her kids) which she constantly checks and answers, she even takes them to the toilet with her. She has to turn out work to tight deadlines for her clients and I’ve never known her to disappoint any. She has a baby fund of fifteen thousand pounds for the private education of a baby that has not been conceived as yet. Awesome.

I recently bumped into someone who I hadn’t seen for at least fifteen years. She looked fantastic and told me she was out shopping to celebrate. I being myself enquired what she was celebrating and in a boastful but entertaining gush she told me, and I quote; ‘I’ve just celebrated my fiftieth birthday, just got my decree nisi and my Masters in the same week and I’m menopausal . . . all men are on pause as I celebrate and spent some time with the new me.’ 

Isn’t she awesome? Or at least funny.
 
Super Women . . .
 
Examine your relationship with time. Stop answering emails at least an hour before you go to sleep and read a real book, not a kindle. Finally, you can complete a project by dropping it from your ‘to do’ list, especially if it’s been on the list for a while.
 
My Sheroes
 
As we come to the end of March, internationally known and celebrated as women’s month which celebrates the achievements of women in all industries across the globe, I look closer to home for my sheroes.  
 
The women in my life have high standards; they’re confident in their knowledge and skills and willingly share information. They’re intelligent, set progressive goals and work towards attaining them. They work smart mostly, but also hard when it’s called for and they don’t have a problem with telling me about myself should they need to.

They make me laugh, think deep and out of the box and I’m learning to value me through their eyes. Through contact with these wonderful women, I have been a teacher, a student, a friend, a sister, a shoulder to cry on, an acquaintance, a mentor and above all they have allowed me to be me, warts ‘n’ all. Thank you my sisters.

Divas of Colour 2014

We would like to congratulate the organisers of the first Divas of Colour event, which took place at the Hilton Tower Bridge on 22nd March.

 
The director, Faustina Anyanwu is pleased with the first event. Faustina said, ‘the event well beyond my wildest expectations.’  Unfortunately I wasn’t in attendance as it clashed with a long booked event, but I heard wonderful feedback about it from the poet, Patricia Foster.
 
We would like to congratulate all the winners of awards in their category and especially the winner of Diva Face, Vanessa NM. Faustina also announced that a donation was made to the Domestic Violence Service.

Images of Black Women Film Festival 2014

Images of Black Women Film Festival are celebrating ten years in business. The organisation has been consistent in its promotion of race and gender equality in front and behind the camera and they are requesting you like their FB page . . . which is not a very hard thing to do.

There are so many talented film makers around and I’m sure they’ve been given a boost by the success of Steve McQueen’s 12 Years of Slavery. Please do check out Images of Black Women Film Festival and experience some very good films by women.

Half A Yellow Sun, (the book was written by Chimamanda Aditchi Ngoze) will open this year’s festival on the 11th. The Cruel Cut, a short film around FGM, and others. Don’t take my word for it, check out the Tricycle Theatre on 11th, 12th and 13th April and Rich Mix on 14th, 19th, and 20th April.
 
Pan-African Business Expo scheduled for 17th April 2014 at Kings College London, Strand.

Free Me To Be Me, Protect The Girl Child Campaign

We had another information day, this time in West Ealing where the audience consisted of older women, the eldest being in her eighties who attended the domestic abuse awareness day on 21st March.

We are overwhelmed and encouraged by the support that has been gathering speed towards Protect The Girl Child Campaign, and we are humbled and pleased that the message is getting through to more people.
