Stamp Out Hunger
Food Drive

Don't forget to put out your donation on Saturday early in the morning BEFORE you check your mail.
What seems to be needed now at the cupboard is:  pork & beans, canned chicken breast, crackers, and canned fruit.
(Oatmeal, sugar, and flour also, but not sure if those items would be appropriate for this food campaign.)

The Juan Seguin Task Force met on Saturday, May 3, 2019 and many things have happened since then.  Here is a summary of where we are now:
Judith signed the PSA yesterday (05/07/19) and it has been delivered to SISD.
Code compliance follow up with the city is scheduled for Thursday, May 9 at 10:00.
Environmental Phase One visit happened on Monday (05/06/19).
Property condition assessment inspection happened on Tuesday (05/07/19).  We expect these two reports within 14 days. We are working on estimates for the survey and appraisal.
We are also working on the asbestos assessment/testing and working on a building operating   budget. Work is continuing with the MIF application. We have established a subcommittee to choose an architect. It is also time to start building relationships with community partners. We talked about having guest sermons and a congregational field trip to Centro in San Marcos.
The due diligence period is May 7th to August 7th although we are aiming to finish sooner to allow time to schedule the congregational vote. It’s exciting and moving fast so far.

The 2019 Goat Project Quilt is now complete. This is a joint project with Faith and Spirit of Joy Lutheran Churches.   It is a queen size quilt that has been named "Confetti Stars".  We plan to sell tickets starting Sunday, May 5th - Wednesday, June 12th.  The winner will be contacted on Saturday, June 15th.  The tickets are $5.00 each or 6 for $25.00.  You may purchase them on Sunday mornings or through the church offices during the week.  We would like to thank LouAnne Fisher for quilting, binding and naming our quilt for this year.  The quilt was assembled by Vicki Bierstedt, Nancy Hartfiel, Mary Petrosky and Janet Wolber.  This quilt was a joy to put together.

I have experienced the trauma of mental illness in my family.  I was frustrated by the lack of knowledge and help.  Mental Health First Aid gives you the tools to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a metal health crisis.  Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course with instruction on how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.  Topics include depression, anxiety disorders, suicide, panic attacks, traumatic events and psychosis.  This class is highly interactive. This class is offered at no charge, thanks to a grant.  Saturday, June 8 at the   Advocacy Center, 8:30 am-6:00 pm. I will gladly answer your questions. Box lunch provided.
Register at EVENTBRITE or see Alfrieda Leiter.

We are publishing a plea for at least 2 new volunteers to serve with the Doerr Team. We just lost another volunteer due to family obligations. Our team serves on the third Saturdays of January, March, May, July, September, and November. Our next service date will be on May 18th. In particular, we are in need  of volunteers who can fill orders.  The hours are 8:45 am to 11:45 am.  Contact Steve or Nancy.  Thanks so much!

A Benefit BBQ, Silent and Live Auction and Dance has been scheduled to help defray medical expenses and lost income for Cody Smith.  The event is scheduled for June 23 at the McQueeney Lion’s Club, 3211 FM 78 in McQueeney. Doors open at 4:00 pm with the dinner and silent auction.  Live auction is from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm with the live music and dance to follow.  Tickets are $  25.00 for dinner and dance or $10.00 for to-go plates each.  Sponsorships are available.  Come out and support Cody in his fight against pancreatic cancer. This 25 year old young man is a member of Peach Lutheran in New Braunfels. Questions should be addressed to Kathy Smith (210) 414-0413 or Andrew Ladshaw (830) 708-3921.

Spirit of Joy has been very generous in donating items for the Humanitarian Respite Center. They are in need of small size shoes, both in adult and in children's sizes.  If sales arise on these products, please consider donating a pair or two.  In April, donations will be collected for Proyecto Azteca. This organization provides neighborhood lending libraries.  On the previous trip to the Rio Grande Valley, SOJ donated many books for these libraries.  Books continue to be needed as  lending libraries are constantly being built and set up in neighborhoods.  Books of all kinds will be needed:  children, teens, and adults, both in English and in Spanish.  There will be a tub on the stage each Sunday for the collection of the donated books.  Thank you for your generosity in the support of the youth's servant leadership program.
