Women of the ELCA | St. Peter Lutheran Church

Spirit of Joy WELCA will recognize Thankoffering Sunday on November 20, 2020.  A short homily will be spoken and prayers given at this service.  Thankoffering envelopes will be delivered to all WELCA Circle Attendees and are also available at the church office.  You need not have an envelope to make a donation.  Simply write a check with the WELCA notation at the bottom and send into the church office.  Due to COVID-19, we are all unable to meet collectively but we can recognize this Sunday as very important in the life of our congregation.  WELCA members (all members of the church) do very important work in the name of Christ's ministry and we welcome the opportunity to share this special time.
Thank you.

[Please note that this weekly update article discusses issues of physical, spiritual, and sexual abuse. Proceed with caution and care and concern for your own well-being.]
Over the past few months numerous allegations - from over 40 women - of emotional, spiritual, physical, and sexual abuse have come out against church composer and liturgist David Haas. Haas has composed some of the most well-loved and utilized contemporary hymns in the Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW). We Are CalledBlest Are They, and You Are Mine are hymns that we have sung regularly at Spirit of Joy and are near and dear to many of our hearts (including mine). However, not only were they composed by someone who has been accused of deeply hurting a lot of people, these songs themselves were tools that he used specifically for coercion, grooming, and manipulation. As such, we will no longer be using songs composed by David Haas in our worship.
Congregational singing should be something that feeds our spirits and draws us closer to God. I do not believe that music written to hurt other people can accomplish either of those goals. If you would like to discuss this more, please do not hesitate to reach out. In the meantime, here is an article with more information regarding the situation. [PLEASE note that this article describes the alleged abuse in great detail. If this is something that you are not prepared for, please take my word that it is bad.]

A Prayer for Putting on a Face Mask

Creator God, as I prepare to go into the world, help me to see the sacramental nature of wearing of this cloth.  Let it be a tangible and visible way of living love for my neighbors, as I love myself.
Christ Jesus, since my lips will be covered, uncover my heart, that people would see my smile in the crinkles around my eyes.  Since my voice may be muffled, help me o speak clearly, not only with my words, but with my actions.
Holy Spirit, as the elastic touches my ears, remind me to listen carefully and caringly to all those I meet.  May this simple piece of cloth be shield and banner, and may each breath that it holds, be filled with Your love.  In your name and in that love, I pray, Amen.
