A letter to all Spirit of Joy members will be available for pick-up on Sunday, March 31, 2019.  This letter announces a congregational vote scheduled for April 14, 2019.  The more letters personally picked up on Sunday, the lower the postage costs to Spirit of Joy.  Thank you.

COUNCIL CORNER
 
Welcome to Council Corner! Each month, council will give a brief overview of our meeting held that month. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask a Council Member for more information.
·         SISD extended the bid deadline for the Juan Seguin Campus. Council and Juan Seguin Task Force are working hard on getting all information together.
·         Be on the lookout for more information regarding meetings and information from the Juan Seguin Task Force.
·         February was slightly below the $1850 goal we had set, but we are still in the black.

Legislative Conference

We embarked on becoming more effective advocates led by the love of Christ when we
attended a human rights and social justice conference recently hosted and led by Texas
Impact. Through a theme of Blessed Are They, we learned that our stories are the
advocacy tool we all have. Advocacy is loving our neighbor. We re-imagined service as
bridging charity to justice; strengthening direct service with public policy. Ask us about
The Story of the Children in the River. God uses our hands through our direct service
work and our voices through our advocacy efforts, to restore and reconcile our world.
 
Let us join together to call on Texas lawmakers to prioritize the needs of the
marginalized and vulnerable in our state; to work for the healing of racial and economic
injustice; and to protect the environment that sustains all our lives.
 
Our Legislative Priorities for 2019:
Education:
Increase funding for public education, and ensure that public dollars go to public
education for public purposes.
Fully fund full-day pre-kindergarten statewide.
The Environment:
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Texas by advancing the use of renewable
energy.
Establish planning processes to prepare for impacts attributable to climate change.
Civil Rights:
Eliminate all forms of discriminatory law enforcement, including repealing SB 4.
Increase accountability, transparency, and state oversight of state spending on border
security.
Health and Wellness:
Ensure comprehensive health insurance coverage for all Texans including expanding
Medicaid.
Adopt measures to reduce maternal and infant mortality.
Hunger and Poverty:
Remove and resist barriers to enrollment in public benefits such as nutrition
assistance and health insurance.
End payday lending and other predatory financial practices.

The Missional River Experiment is happening!

Pastor Megan and Karen Wallock met with the Community in School Counselors and their
supervisors to come up with a wish list for our partnership. These counselors currently serve
students at Barnes, Briesemeister and Seguin High School. We decided we don’t have to wait
for a building—we can begin this work now! Many of the ideas will take some time with much
more planning, but we can begin our support of our Seguin community with our initial collection
of socks and snacks! Beginning this Sunday, please bring whatever you can of the following:

New socks (teenager sized)
Refillable water bottles
Granola bars
Cheese or peanut butter cracker packs
Chips ( individual sized)
Bottled water (6-12 oz size)
Applesauce pouches
Jerky sticks
Gift cards to HEB or Walmart

These are examples, so any kind of snack in individual serving sizes is great. Refrigeration is
not available at this time for these items.
Does anyone have a mini-fridge to donate?
We will be collecting more items as we get going, but we’re hoping to let these kids know now
there is someone helping them! Let’s make this happen!

JUAN SEGUIN PROPERTY UPDATE

Seguin ISD has extended the bid deadline to April 15, 2019.  The Juan Seguin Task Force is continuing to investigate this property and, along with Church Council, will hold informational sessions during Sunday School and Lenten dinners for the next few weeks to answer your questions and keep you as up-to-date as possible on the process.  While our initial congregational meetings focused on the positives, we are taking the risks associated with renovating these older buildings very seriously and carefully planning the due diligence steps that would have to be satisfied before a purchase could be made.  Please hold us in prayer as we work toward the goal of a permanent home for our congregation.

MARCH 31 – 5TH SUNDAY BENEVOLENCE ANNOUNCED


March is our first month with a 5th Sunday, and our 5th Sunday Benevolence offering for will be  the Tiemann Endowment Fund for Leadership Development. This fund was established to support the development of congregational lay leaders, pastors, and deacons serving under Letter of Call.  Managed by Lutheran Foundation of the Southwest as a permanent endowment, this fund is creating a new generation of supported and trained leaders for our faith community. All offering on Match 31st will be given to this fund unless designated otherwise. 
 
 

WATER TO THRIVE BENEFIT DINNER SCHEDULED

The 9th Annual Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction for Water to Thrive will be April 11th at First United Methodist Church from 5:30 to 7:30. Students from TLU as well as the Center for Servant Leadership (TLU) are sponsoring this event.  Water to Thrive is a non-profit organization that builds clean water wells in rural Ethiopia and Sierra Leon.  So far, TLU has helped build six wells.  The cost of one well cost is $5,000 and serves about 500 people within the region.  The dinner will celebrate the Ethiopian culture with traditional dishes from that area.  There will also be a silent auction with items provided by local businesses in the Seguin community.
 
Spirit of Joy can help support this endeavor in three different ways:

2. Contribute a silent auction donation item.  SOJ is donating a basket of items around the water theme.  You can donate an item or money to create the basket.  Make a check with the memo of Water to Thrive basket or cash in an envelope with the same designation.
3. Purchase a ticket to attend the Benefit Dinner.  Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door.  Grace Mueller will have tickets to sell on Sunday and then they will be available at the office during the week.  You can also go to the TLU Center for Servant Leadership building to obtain tickets.

GERONIMO AND ALLIGATOR CREEK CLEAN-UP SCHEDULED 
             Calling all you “naturalists.”  Calling all you “environmentalists.”  Calling all you “outdoors-people.”  Calling all you …. Calling EVERYONE!!!!  The Geronimo Creek cleanup project scheduled for April 6, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. to Noon needs your participation!  In addition to getting a nifty T-shirt that proclaims Spirit of Joy’s participation in this community-wide event and spending your morning with some of the coolest people ON THE PLANET, you will get the satisfaction of helping preserve the natural beauty of one of our natural treasures.  The Geronimo Creek is primarily spring fed, with the springs being just a few miles north of Seguin, a tad north of Geronimo.  The upper reaches are called Alligator Creek (although I doubt if an alligator has been seen there!)  Our work begins with a general    assembly and a breakfast taco, then groups are assigned areas for their efforts.  We work as a Spirit of Joy team and enjoy each other’s company and cooperation as we pick up trash, clean out debris, etc.  …maybe not glamorous but very productive and exercising the stewardship of our world that we are called to do.  Please sign up on the sheet on the resource table!!!         

WELCA HEALTH KIT COLLECTION

We are complete with our donations to pack up 100 health kits for Lutheran World Relief.

SERVICE TRIP FOR YOUTH SET – DONATION REQUESTED

Spirit of Joy has been very generous in donating items for the Humanitarian Respite Center. They are in need of small size shoes, both in adult and in children sizes.  If sales arise on these products, please consider donating a pair or two.  In April, donations will be collected for Proyecto Azteca. This organization provides neighborhood lending libraries.  On the previous trip to the Rio Grande Valley, SOJ donated many books for these libraries.  Books continue to be needed as  lending libraries are constantly being built and set up in neighborhoods.  Books of all kinds will be needed:  children, teens, and adults, both in English and in Spanish.  There will be a tub on the stage each Sunday for the collection of the donated books.  Thank you for your generosity in the support of the youth's servant leadership program.
