Environmental Action

Policy Statement - Wind Turbines in Ireland

This years’ Global Wind Day theme was to raise awareness of the importance of the energy transition and the role wind energy can play.
GEAI agrees that wind energy is vital and supports the creation of wind farms in general. However, when these projects are on peatlands, they present some concerns.
GEAI is launching a full statement in which these concerns are presented together with suggested actions. We consider that community engagement and transparency are essential for a real energy transition. To read our full statement here

Ballinaglera Biodiversity project

On the 18th May GEAI’s volunteers and ecologist Heather Bothwell introduced the Ballinaglera Biodiversity Project to the students of St. Hugh’s National School.
All students were presented with a colouring book that contained nine local species of plants.
It was amazing to see that everyone already had some knowledge of the plants and were eager to understand how important they are in various ways.
The nine species presented can all be found locally in May. Heather’s studies will certainly raise our awareness of the unique biodiversity in County Leitrim! We can expect more information and a lot of interesting results from this project later this year.

Climate Action Days

Good Energies Alliance Ireland (GEAI)’s volunteers delivered a programme of Climate Action Days in May to the transition year students of Lough Allen College.
The first session took place at the school. GEAI’s volunteers gave a presentation with important concepts related to climate change and local issues, followed by discussion promoted by a card game matching causes and effects.
At the end of the session all students brainstormed a few actions they could initiate to tackle climate change.
The second session was a field trip to the Organic Centre. First, all the students were given a tour of the centre and the importance of ecological practices and biodiversity were explained to them. A workshop in the second half of the day included discussions on how to create a campaign.

Community News

Open day

In May GEAI organized an Open Day for Ukraine. Together with the local community, we managed to raise 900€! 🎉 This money is going to Ukraine to support the paramedics on the ground and those now fleeing the east of Ukraine as it comes under such bombardment.
It was amazing to see a community come together for a great cause, from donations of prizes for the raffle, cakes for the cake sale to participating in our car boot sale! Thank you to all the businesses and people in the community that made this day a great success.
