October 2021

We are Celebrating our 10th Anniversary! 🎉

Ten years of hard work to protect our wonderful planet.

Initially, our efforts were focused on
the campaign against fracking – it took six years of demonstrations, awareness raising, lobbying and social media campaigns to achieve a national ban on fracking but, in conjunction with other lobbyists, WE DID IT! But not only fracking; our work included many environmental projects and we have organised many conferences, dialogue sessions, campaigns, surveys, and studies around renewable energy and climate change. Thank you all for your support and your participation in our actions.

Next year, we would like to expand our national profile and host more young European volunteers to help develop more projects to raise awareness on climate change and to improve the well-being of communities. But for the moment, let's roll back the clock and look at the last 10 years of activities and achievements by our volunteers,
here.

Stop Shannon LNG Planning Application!

After our successful campaign against fracking in Ireland, we support Safety Before LNG in its fight against the proposed Shannon LNG Terminal in Tarbert, Co. Kerry,  Shannon LNG Ltd.
(New Fortress Energy) have applied to An Bord Pleanála for planning permission for an LNG terminal, including power plant, floating storage and regasification unit, and on-shore receiving facilities.

We strongly object to this project, which would have such negative environmental impacts, including climate change mitigation, public health, environmental protection and human rights. More information:

The Safety Before LNG petition currently has 390 signatories. The deadline for petitions is October 22nd, 2021.

“Needs & Wants” Survey in Ballinaglera Parish

During the weeks 4th to 15th October, Good Energies Alliance Ireland (GEAI) supported by Ballinaglera Development Association carried out a Ballinaglera Parish Survey.

The “Needs & Wants” Survey looked at how locals feel about living in Ballinaglera, what improvements they would like to see, and how our young volunteers could help.

We interviewed many households in Ballinaglera Parish and got many ideas from a cross-section of the population - young people; people with families; and older people. The results will be presented at an Open Day in Ballinaglera Community Hall in November 2021.

Back to this summer: two Leitrim volunteers in Greece

This summer GEAI sent Tanisha and Huck to sunny Xylokastro, Greece, through the European Solidarity Corps Programme (ESC). The ESC is a fantastic opportunity funded by the European Union, which allows young people to volunteer for a short or long period of time abroad.

Tanisha and Huck joined Orfeas Organisation's team and took care of the local environment in Greece, cleaning the forest, the beach, and the local park.

Welcome to our new ESC Volunteer!

Célia joined the communications team in September. She decided to leave her French life to join us and to live a new experience in Ireland. Her journey began with quite a few twists.

The Schools Climate Action programme is coming back!

Our ESC volunteers are now organising the delivery of Climate Action sessions in schools. It is their first chance to meet the students face to face since they arrived and they are very happy to have the opportunity to engage on a personal basis with young people from the area.

The goal of this program is to raise awareness about climate change and encourage the class to plan campaigns and carry out innovative projects based on sustainability, e.g. energy, waste, and food production.

During two sessions in the school and the final session in the Organic Centre (Rossinver, Co. Leitrim), students will be involved in environmental issues and thus become stakeholders of change.

If you are interested in Climate Action Days for your school, please contact us.
