Good Energies Alliance Ireland Newsletter
June 2021

Welcome to our June 2021 Newsletter! We have been very quiet this year but now we are delighted that with the country opening up, GEAI can plan to continue its good work on Climate Action, working with communities locally and nationally. Our plans include rolling out our on-line Climate Action dialogues regionally and working on the ground to encourage involvement in Climate Action by all sectors of society.

Climate Action Dialogues in Leitrim on 16th & 17th June

Leitrim, together with the rest of Ireland, is experiencing changes in weather patterns due to climate change.  The way we live must change and we have to take action to reduce our carbon emissions. GEAI is responding to the crisis by organising  on-line Climate Action Dialogue sessions for the general public in Leitrim on Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th June at 7- 8.30 pm.

NOTE: We are starting in Leitrim with our Climate Action Dialogues but we intend to host similar events in other counties.

Peatlands are Ireland's hidden gems

Ireland's bogs are hidden gems in the battle to reach our net-zero goal by 2050, sequestering more carbon than our forests!

Our ESC Volunteer Silvia is continuing her research on peatlands and their restoration. Recently, she had the opportunity to have a conversation with Niall O’Brolchain, a researcher from NUI on Irish peatlands, also involved with the policy development of paludiculture in Europe. She also interviewed
Nuala Madigan (IPCC) and Dr Hans Joosten (Germany), both experts on peatland restoration.

Climate Conversations: a call for submissions

One of the top priorities of GEAI in the past two months was its response to the public consultation on climate action by the Department of Energy, Climate Change and Communications (DECC).  Government is developing its 2021 Climate Action Plan and wanted the public's views on how we can transform Ireland and support people to take their own climate actions. We were all invited to be part of this Climate Conversation and to share our views on the government's climate action and how it could support us to take climate action in our own lives. We responded both as individuals and as an organisation.

Submissions were closed on 18th May and we look forward to seeing a report of the responses.

Guided Dawn Chorus: it all started with birdsong

"Birdsong in Ireland made a big impression on me earlier this year, so I’ve wanted to get acquainted with our feathery neighbours ever since."
One of our ESC Volunteers, Tania, tells us in her latest blog post about the musical adventure she experienced at dawn at Tommy Earley's farm. To find out how it went, read Tania's blog!

Single-use plastic: impact and alternative solution
Did you know that, due to so much plastic ending up in our food-chain, humans eat up to 18.1 kg of plastic in their lifetime?

In her new blog post, our ESC Volunteer Marine gives us some interesting information about single-use plastic and some tips on how to limit its use.
