Hello Dear Scroll Ensemble Newsletter Readers!

Hopefully you are enjoying the fringe of the summer holidays! We took some time off, but will be back in full swing next week! Last week Robert was teaching at the Apollo Summer course (more on that next week), and due to some technical problems only the week after that, we will start our Pachelbel Challenge, a simple video every day for a week with the Pachelbel Ground.

In this newsletter we talk about our first upcoming concert, our videos from the last few weeks (What is Classical Music Improvisation? & new Beethoven Variations) and the next free webinar.

All our best wishes and Covid-approved salutations,

Robert de Bree & James Hewitt

Every Woman - An Opera

This will be our first performance after Corona decided to put its two "o"s firmly in 2o2o! We are very excited! With very limited resources we will be staging an opera that takes places on a boat, thanks to the incredibly hard work of Merel van Geest.
We will be pirates, there will be Monteverdi, Händel, improvisations, poems: you can't miss it..!

August 30th 2020 at 17:00 and 20:00 in The Hague

What is Classical Music Improvisation?

After having talked about Classical Music Improvisation for years, we realised, we have never really talked about WHAT it is? So, inspired by WIRED, we decided to try an explanation in 5 levels, where level 1 is understandable for a child and level 5 is aimed at professional musicians. Watch the rest here:
Level 2 (non-musician)
Level 3 (amateur musician)
Level 4 (music student)
Level 5 (professional)

Ornamentation Webinar

My next free (DUTCH!) webinar through Huismuziek will be on Friday October 30th on ornamentation on late renaissance / early baroque style. It will very much be geared towards beginners and there will also be the opportunity to play some of the examples and get comments from me. The examples will be sent beforehand, so they can be practised.
Register here (COURSE IS IN DUTCH!)

Improvised Variations on Clarinet and Bassoon Duo

Remember the simple Swiss Beethoven variations? We took ideas from those variations and applied them on another piece by Beethoven, without looking at what he had done. Do you think our Clarinet-Bassoon duo variations ended up the same as Beethoven's version? In this other video, we talk about our process.
