Kathleen Choe, "Leeann"
"I wanted to go to Hawaii, where everyone looked like me." This line strikes a chord in my heart because it shows Leann is wonderfully, gloriously human. Her need to make positive difference is right alongside her search for her own place in the world. She finds out quick that she's going to have to grow up fast in order to survive the chaos of Vietnam, and it's clunky, awkward, and sometimes downright painful. Yet despite the horrors that she experiences there, her need to do good does not diminish. If anything, it grows stronger.
I have the honor, as Martha, to speak the line that became the title of the play, "A piece of my heart goes with each of them!" To me, it poetically sums up the overall experience of war. You don't lose yourself all at once, but slowly, piece by piece. Like a mosaic. If you look at a mosaic, you see the overall picture, which may look complete, even beautiful. But look up close at the individual pieces that make up the mosaic, and you may see that they have cracked, faded or gone missing altogether. That's how Martha comes home, looking whole to the outside world, while up close, she's broken and lost hundreds of pieces that no one can see.
