Sustainable Energy Days in Alchevsk
In September 2012, the city of Alchevsk joined The Covenant of Mayors initiative which aims to reduce greenhouse emissions by 2020. At the moment, the city is developing its Sustainable Energy Action Plan which is the main task of the initiative.
Last week, on 25-27 of June, the city has held its first Sustainable Energy Days with the assistance of the Association “Energy Efficient Cities of Ukraine”.
Sustainable Energy Week in Novovolynsk
On 24 June the city of Novovolynsk held its first Sustainable Energy Week. The city has recently joined the Covenant of Mayors initiative and is one of the pilot cities of the project “Ukraine and Georgia in the Covenant of Mayors”.
A round table with experts of Energy Treaty Secretariat
On 20 June, an expert on energy saving and energy efficiency Dmytro Leskiv took part in the round table discussion with the experts of Energy Treaty Secretariat in the framework of in-depth research dedicated to completion of Ukrainian commitments in the energy efficiency sphere. The research took place from 17 to 21 of June and the round table discussion was held in the State Agency for Energy Efficiency in Kiev.
The topics of the event were aimed to define the level of public organizations and other institutions collaboration with governmental structures in the sphere of energy efficiency. The issues also touched the problems of development and implementation of state policy for energy efficiency, defining problem areas in the field of legislation and regulatory policy in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy.
A workshop "UNIDO project on ISO 50001 introduction in Ukraine"
On 19 June, an expert on energy efficiency and energy saving Dmytro Leskiv took part in the workshop "Discussion of the technical standard of UNIDO project for ISO 50001 introduction in Ukraine". The workshop was organized by UNIDO and Institute of Energy management and energy saving of Kyiv Polytechnic University.
Annual Covenant of Mayors ceremony in Brussels
On 24 of June, an annual Covenant of Mayors ceremony took place in Brussels, in Euro parliament.
This event was attended by heads of leading European institutions, member of parliament, recent Covenant signatories and representatives from Ukrainian cities (Lviv, Lutsk, Ternopil, Mena, Burshtyn, Slavutych, Konotop, Zhytomyr), Georgian cities (Rustavi and Gori), EECU as a national Covenant Supporter and Kazakhstan cities (Astana, Aksu).
Moreover, the event was attended by Arnold Schwarzenegger, the celebrity and founder of the R-20 fund, which is dealing with the mitigation of the climate change. Mr. Schwarzenegger had organized a meeting of a Fund, where the head and deputy head of Donetsk Regional State Administration and other chairmen from Donetsk region were invited. The work meeting before the ceremony was attended by Andriy Kyrchiv - EECU executive director and Oleksandr Dey - Lutsk energy manager, who presented Covenant of Mayors initiative and advantages of EECU membership.
ASED experts will help Rivne to develop its energy strategy
On 20 June, 2013, an EECU Executive Director Andriy Kyrchiv and Director of Agency of Sustainable Energy Development (ASED) Oleksandr Shumelda visited the city of Rivne. The aim of the visit was the signing of agreement between Rivne economic department and ASED concerning preparation of Sustainable Energy Action Plan within Covenant of Mayors initiative.
The city of Dolyna has brought together EECU cities
On June 6-8, in Dolyna, an annual conference and General Meeting of the Association "Energy Efficient Cities of Ukraine" took place. The theme of this year's meeting, which brought together more than a hundred participants from all regions of Ukraine, was "Sustainable energy development of small and medium-sized cities in Ukraine: Current State and Prospects." The Co-organizer of the conference was Dolyna City Council.
Covenant of Mayors East Steering Commitee meeting
On 31 May, in the premises of the European Commission in Brussels, a third Steering Committee meeting of the "Covenant of Mayors East" project took place. During the meeting leading experts and work packages leaders reported on completion of main tasks and also described main problems and challenges in implementation of these actions. Deputy executive director Andriy Kyrchiv, who is responsible for work package no.2 "Capacity building" presented report on the realization of the work plan and overall vision of project activities in the next two years.
Visit of the Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine at the EECU office
On 31 May 2013, the Head of the European Union’s Delegation to Ukraine, Ambassador Jan Tombinski visited the office of the Association “Energy Efficient Cities of Ukraine”.
In the framework of his visit, Mr. Tombinski got acquainted with the mission and main work activities of the Association and its member cities with regard to sustainable municipal energy development. During this meeting, EECU staff presented programs and projects currently implemented by the organization and proposed some project activities that could help to address major energy-related problems of Ukrainian municipalities.
The mission accomplished
On 24 May, a volunteer of Peace Corps, Michele Vazquez officially terminated her service in Association "Energy Efficient Cities of Ukraine".
During two years of her's tenure, Michele shared her experience in project management, staff management, institutional development, shared her experience and supported EECU growth, took part in conferences and other events organized by EECU. But the most important - with all her actions secured the implementation of the main task of the Peace Corps - deeper understanding and collaboration of American and Ukraine nations.
Climate Alliance annual conference
One of the largest networks of municipalities – The Climate Alliance, the organization that counts 1500 members, held an annual conference in Hague (Netherlands) on 15-17 May. The motto of the conference was “Together in transition”, which demonstrates the eagerness of the organization to form sustainable energy development.
The final conference of the MHR project
On 13-14 of May in Kyiv, a final conference of the Municipal Heating Reform project, implemented by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) was held.
The event was attended by US Ambassador in Ukraine, Mr. John F. Tefft, representatives from Ministry of Regional Development and Housing of Ukraine, State Agency on energy efficiency, Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, and other governmental and non-governmental institutions. The event was also attended by partner cities of the project and EECU member cities. From EECU Andriy Kyrchiv, participated in the event.
