Interculturalism in Animated Series and Asian Heritage Month 05/21 ⛩️

May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada, celebrated since the 1990s. It is a time to reflect on and celebrate the contributions that Canadians of Asian descent have made, and continue to make, to the growth and prosperity of Canada. At LingoStar, we thought it was a great opportunity to write a newsletter that focuses on interculturalism and the influence cultures and languages have on each other. In this issue, we've focused on the animated series that shaped our childhoods across different continents and the adaptations made due to cultural differences.
LingoStar Highlights
At LingoStar, we make it a point to celebrate important dates. We love to share cultural and linguistic facts but also to commemorate key events and spread some knowledge! It is also a good opportunity for us to work on the aesthetics and identity of our brand. Here is a quick insight into what we've been up to on our social media accounts.
LingoStar Current Focus
Our focus this month is Asian Heritage Month. At LingoStar, we took this opportunity to spread awareness and remind ourselves that diversity is a gift and a strength and that we must stand against any kind of racism. Keeping in mind this year's theme—Recognition, Resilience, and Resolve—we've selected a few social media posts and articles that, we hope, you will find interesting.

In this article, Joy Zhang shares her own experience of growing up with misrepresented Asian characters. She makes a point to help others understand and see what is really going on behind these ill-conceived attempts at Asian inclusion. Her most striking point is "Who do you think is telling the story? Who do you think they're telling that story for?"
How Asian food has become the star of Canada's culinary scene
A mouthwatering article about how and why Asian food rose to prominence in Canada.

English Language Etymology from a French Perspective

Interculturalism can take many forms. One of these is through language. How much do you really know about what shaped the English language as we know it today? Contrary to what one might think, English is the product of many cultures and despite being of Germanic origin, a significant part of the language's etymology finds its source in the French language. With our latest blog post, we go back in time and dive into the English language etymology from a French perspective.

Some countries and cultures can have a lot in common but this doesn't mean they always understand each other, as this next article shows.
65 Canadian French Words and Phrases
French people can sometimes struggle to understand Canadian French, and it's not just because of the accent. Find out why in this article full of examples!
Interculturalism also means that we have a lot to learn from each country, culture and language, and this is a good thing. That is why we've decided to focus on the Bengali language in the following blog post as it's an interesting language and one of the fastest growing languages on the internet.
The Bengali Language and the History of its Evolution
Do you want to learn about the official language of Bangladesh? Also spoken by several other communities, Bengali is the 7th most spoken language in the world by the total number of speakers. Read our blog post about Bengali and its history to discover the language and interesting cultural facts.

Animated Movies Across Cultures and Continents
10 Cartoons that Look Different in Other Countries
We all know famous animated movies such as Toy Story, Ratatouille, and Zootopia. But would you recognise your favourite scene if you were to watch the Russian or Japanese version? The adaptation efforts involved in the international distribution of a film are fascinating and require a good knowledge of the target cultures.
The Language of Minions - Gibberish or Polyglot?
Who else also thought that the Minions' language was only gibberish? Well, that's understandable, since the Minions speak not one language, but many! It's actually a very cleverly constructed language created by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud. If you want to know more about Minionese, this video is as funny as it's informative!
