Gender in Translation: Hidden Equality. 03/22 🌈

Welcome to our March Newsletter. This month, we discuss one of the most debated issues of history: gender equality. For centuries, women have been considered the home-makers who take care of the children and a husband. These days, most women in the developed world make their own choices around their family and work-life balance. Luckily, much progress has been made to make it possible for women to enter the fields of science, politics or engineering that would have traditionally been reserved for men only. But even though women are now participating in all areas of professional life, there is still a lot of work to be done before we can state that equality does really exist.

Additionally, today's society appears to be much more complex, as we are living in a gender-fluid world where everything is not just about men and women. ⚧️
All of this affects the way we express ourselves through language, thus making communication and translation more challenging.

Are you getting curious? If you want to know how society is tackling LGBTQI+ issues and what the role of the translator is, then keep on scrolling! 🌈

Gender Neutrality – How to Get a Bias-Free Environment

Nowadays, we find ourselves in a multi-faceted society where everything is not just about "male" and "female". Lots of people define themselves as non-binary, making it difficult to address them, especially for non-native speakers. Indeed, the English language has adopted the use of the singular pronoun "they", but for people who are non-native English speakers, it is not easy to understand why "they" should be used as a singular pronoun. Fortunately, things have been changing lately and languages are getting through by adopting an increasingly inclusive point of view. What's the role of translators in this? How can languages create a bias-free environment? If you are getting curious and want to know more, you should definitely read this blog post!
