November Monthly Digest

NZRise activities and discussions from last month

Yes! Christmas is coming :)
8 days till Santa! I still vividly recall from my days at a telco that every year it was promised that everything would go quiet as soon as we entered brown out in early December. Yet every year brown out got pushed back so more things could get crammed in before the year finished. I sincerely hope this is not your situation currently!

Our Christmas social event was fantastic because we had a whole heap of new faces. Soon to be new members! Many thanks to Wyn for hosting and Victoria for managing it. We have crowned a new quiz champion. Congratulations to Josh Forde. The chocolate is in the mail. For those of you that missed out you can test yourself, the quiz is on our discusison board, see the link further down this newsletter.

The most important thing you can do right now is have a think about a great procurement experience you have had this year and submit a nomination to our procurement award. Make sure you also spread the word, send it to other similar businesses. Instead of complaining about procurement lets set the bar high and shine the light on companies that are doing a good job of getting on with business.

Feel free to pass this newsletter on to your team. Stay up to date with future events on our website and join in the discussions on the board. If you have trouble logging in, let me know. Have you followed us on Twitter yet? @NZRise

Last Months Meeting

Christmas Social Event.

A meet and mingle session accompanied by fun and food!

Hosted by API Talent

A wonderful afternoon of local beer and wine, great platters and a gathering of great New Zealand digital business people.
There were tears and laughs over the quiz. I am still not certain how Victoria scored an extra half a point in there somewhere!
More importantly it was a chance to catch up with people, share ideas, discuss challenges and celebrate the year that was.

Test yourself on the quiz here
Paul Matthews had a very valid pedant point about the fact that I used the word export in one question, so feel free to award yourself a free point for that question!

Great Procurement Award

We want to reward great procurement
Much of the business in the the New Zealand Digital and Technology sector is awarded via a procurement process.
With stories and urban myths galore on less than optimal experiences it seems like a great time to celebrate the exemplars.
Here is your chance to nominate a company, agency or project for a Great Procurement Experience - celebrate their good behaviour, a successful outcome and your positive procurement experience.
So spread the word and send us your nomination.
See more details on our website or click the button below to nominate.

News from our Members

Congratulations to Don and the team with the launch of CabNet and now the progressive rollout throughout Govt.

CabNet is a secure, online system for managing papers through the Cabinet and Cabinet committee decision-making process.

It has been rolled out to approximately 3000 people in 28 Ministers’ offices and 47 agencies across the state sector who work with Cabinet material.

This is huge news for an all open source system.
For more information see their press release.
Go Kiwi!

Abletech has built an app that is literally a lifesaver!
Recently a woman in Stoke went into cardiac arrest. A police officer used his AED Locator app to find the closest defibrillator. Nelson Bays Area Commander Inspector Mat Arnold-Kelly said the situation was urgent.

“The officers used an app on their smartphones to locate the nearest defibrillator, which was at a local supermarket. Thankfully they were able to get the defibrillator and successfully re-started the woman’s heart.”

At last count there were over 5000 AED locations in the New Zealand database. The free iPhone and Android apps will quickly tell you the closest defibrillators.

See more about the process they went through to build this system

NZTA and Biased Procurement?

We need your thoughts on this issue. First of all have a read of the Stuff article.
Snapper is an NZRise member and though we don't advocate on behalf of individual members there is the broader issue of what should be an open tender process being biased by NZTA. We need to look at how we message this one so please go to the discussion thread and add your thoughts.

Ongoing thread of content from Business New Zealand

Victoria has started a thread because she gets emails and bulletins from Business New Zealand on a regular basis. Many NZRise members are not Business NZ members so she will continue to update this thread with new content from them as it arises just in case anyone is interested. Any questions let Victoria know.

DIA ICT Panel Procurement process - your feedback please

This just got posted today so  am adding it at the last minute becuase it is important and we need your thoughts.
Victoria says - We have been asked by a member company to take up this issue. As context DIA
have issued an RFP for a panel of providers for ICT Architect Services, ICT
Business Analyst Services, and ICT Test Analyst Services.
The RFP can be found on GETS at
The member company has succinctly described the issues with this RFP and will form the basis of our position. I am interested in any other feedback from members to assist in forming a position for NZRise on this issue.
