Future of London October 2015 Update

October Update – Buckle up

What a chaotic month! Everyone we talk with is gearing up for the massive implications of new bills, deals and plans including the Housing & Planning Bill, the renewal of permitted development, housing associations agreeing a voluntary right-to-buy scheme, and 2020 business rates devolution, with its impact on everything from council staffing to infrastructure funding.

Future of London continues to help practitioners at all levels get the job done (and hopefully stay sane) through the turbulence. The array of research and support tools includes our Housing Zones Network â€“ join us for the 27th Oct launch! – and more. See below for ways we can help you.

For now, thanks to Countryside Properties, for part-funding FoL’s new alternative speakers’ network. Designed to add diversity and fresh voices to the urban debate, the network will launch in March 2016. To find out about signing up or supporting the project, contact me at lisa@futureoflondon.org.uk.

In Leaders news: All alumni are invited to vote for your 2015-16 Steering Group reps; check your email for candidate info. Also, Visakha Sri Chandrasekera steps into head FoL’s Leadership programmes on 20th Oct – keep an eye out for a new Mentor Bank and Idea Bank among other initiatives.

Funding: just a heads up on empty homes funding from Nationwide Foundation (deadline 1st November).

In closing, a warm welcome to returning member LB Camden; we’re undertaking promising PRS research with them already, and it will be good to have them back on the Leadership programmes.

See you out there!

Communities in Transition

Chrisp Street market
On 24th September, we visited Poplar (LB Tower Hamlets) to see how Chrisp Street market is being used to anchor regeneration in the surrounding area. Speakers discussed the relevance of local markets, integration with public health initiatives and supporting small businesses. For the full write-up, see our website.

HMO licensing workshop

London's PRS
Our 16th September workshop invited boroughs to discuss PRS licensing schemes – how they fit with a borough’s wider PRS housing strategy, and with the myriad changes to housing policy at a national level. It was also a chance to to comment on PRS licensing performance indicators we are developing to help boroughs to evaluate their schemes.

Future of London, University College London and Arup will hold a senior roundtable on 12th November, on assessing and improving the London public sector response to environmental risk.
