December Update –
Wrapping up a great year

Hello all –

As with most of you, it’s been a mad race to year-end. You can find December highlights below, but certainly our biggest project has been Engaging Private Landlords in Energy Efficiency, a new report supported by EDF Energy which looks at how local authorities can engage with landlords to improve housing standards.

We also held our final London 2050 roundtable of the year, on Capturing Value, hosted by Arup, and welcomed our next alumni representatives to the FoL steering group – Anna Bolsin of LB Waltham Forest (FLL Round 7) and Karen Montgomerie of LB Islington (FLL Round 6). Thanks to outgoing reps Holly Mann and Philippa Bloomfield for getting the group underway and for the great hand-off support.

Thanks also to core sponsors Lewis Silkin for hosting another fabulous Fizz ‘n’ Chips Christmas party, to so many of you for coming along, and to Leaders Plus supporters Campbell Tickell (who I missed at the party; mea culpa!).

Most of all, a huge thank-you on behalf of our superlative board and steering group to Future of London’s amazing team – Jo Wilson, Jennifer Johnson, Alexei Schwab and newcomer Alex Bishop – for going above and beyond in quality, quantity and general good humour through this incredibly busy year.

We’ll share our 2015 programme in the January bulletin. For now, a warm welcome to the newest addition to our 38-strong membership, the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.

Thanks all, and have a wonderful, well-deserved break!

Programme Highlights

Engaging PRS Landlords in Energy Efficiency

PRS
This month, we published our new report, Engaging Private Landlords in Energy Efficiency, sponsored by EDF Energy. At the launch on 3rd December, hosted by Pinsent Masons, we heard from local authority experts on how councils and the GLA are engaging with landlords, and from Alan Whitehead MP on national policy initiatives. Read the event summary here, including presentations and podcasts.

Rethinking SME Workspace

SME Workspace
On 9th December, we partnered with the GLA Regeneration team to hold an event on the role of local authorities in SME workspace provision. Speakers discussed funding, partnerships, understanding tenant and landlord needs, and how workspace provision can be linked to economic and social regeneration strategies. Read the event write-up and view speaker presentations on our website.

London 2050: Surface Tension

Surface Tension
On 26th November, we held the third in our series of events on the London Infrastructure Plan 2050. Surface Tension: Underground London’s impact on the world above, sponsored by Arup, brought together practitioners to discuss best practice in infrastructure delivery in the Capital. A full write-up is available on our website, including audio and speakers' presentations.

Future London Leaders

London 2050
In November, Future London Leaders candidates and a handful of private-sector peers took part in a networking session on ethics & professionalism in the workplace. The lively discussion was led by public-interest practitioner Stephen Hill of C20 Futureplanners, who has provided a short reading list you can download from our website.
