Future of London April 2015 Update
Future of London

April update – 22 days to go ...

Hello all –

What we're faced with after the general election is of course up in the air: battle over Right to Buy? New blood at CLG? Whatever the result, it's bound to be messy, at least for a while. To steel ourselves, we're going along to a couple of London Communications Agency's election previews – doubtless insightful, and probably fun to boot.

For London, there's a lot riding on legislation that was brought in under the wire, as well as on the next government's stance on local authorities, housing, devolution et al. Two new FoL projects address issues which are heavily dependent on central government good will and good sense: Jo Wilson and Richard Tacagni's excellent PRS Licensing report and our third London 2050 briefing, on Capturing Value (both below).

On a less contentious front, we're also about to launch the milestone Future London Leaders Round 10 (!). It's inspiring to see so many insightful and promising candidates coming to the fore, and we do all we can to keep improving the programme.

One candidate joins us from our newest member – London Legacy Development Corporation. A warm welcome to them, and to new supporter British Land!

Best to all, and see you out there!

Programme Highlights

Rent Stabilisation seminar

Rent Stabilisation
On 14th May, FoL will host the seminar Stabilising London’s Private Sector Rents. At this morning seminar, Christine Whitehead (LSE), John Bibby (Shelter) and Nigel Minto (LB Hackney) will lead a balanced discussion on different forms of rent stabilisation and their viability in London. This event is free to attend but registration is required.

Communities in Transition

Communities in Transition
Our next Communities in Transition field trip will be to Whitechapel, on 28th May. Speakers from Tower Hamlets, GLA and Queen Mary's University will discuss the role of the Royal London Hospital and QMUL life sciences cluster as anchor institutions, as well as the arrival of Crossrail and Tower Hamlets' planned civic centre. See our website for details.

Briefing: PRS Licensing

PRS Licensing
Hot on the heels of legislation that may significantly affect PRS licensing in London, our new briefing, PRS licensing – Policy and Practice will help boroughs make sense of the shifting landscape of private-rented property licensing. The paper includes a summary of policy and a step-by-step guide to planning and implementing a scheme. Download it here!

Briefing: Capturing Value

London 2050: Capturing Value
Our third ‘London 2050’ briefing paper is now available, and looks at capturing land value uplift to fund infrastructure delivery. With an emphasis on public-sector interventions, it explores currently available tools and international best-practice for harnessing property value uplift to fund London’s infrastructure needs. Read the full briefing here.
