June Update – All around the place

Hello all –
As we race toward our 23rd June conference on Creating Resilient Town Centres (let us know if you’d like to come – spaces may open!), we’ve been spending a lot of time in some of London’s most interesting and challenging town centres, from Dalston to Croydon and in between.
Topics like safeguarding neighbourhood feel, working with BIDs, improving transport links and integrating housing infuse everything we’ve been doing lately.
You can find write-ups and previews on our Communities in Transition trips with the other programme highlights below. Future London Leaders Round 9 also wrapped last week with thought-provoking presentations on championing place, and we’ll hear from the Leaders Plus group when they finish on 14th July. Nominations for the September intake of both programmes are now open – if you’re a member, ask your Steering Group rep for information, or get in touch!
In closing, we’d like to welcome Michael O’Farrell, new London Regional Director for Leaders sponsor Lovell; their always-interesting housing debate takes place 1st July – see here for info and to register
Hope to see you out there!
Lisa Taylor

Programme Highlights

Rent Stabilisation for London?

Rent Stabilisation
Our post-election seminar explored the practical implications of rent stabilisation in London's private rented sector. Speakers from Shelter, LSE and LB Hackney discussed what could and could not be achieved through rent stabilisation, and what unintended consequences there might be. See our website for a full write-up, presentations and podcasts.

Communities in Transition

Communities in Transition
Our next Communities in Transition field trip will be to Barking town centre on 22nd July. This visit will look at the links between new civic spaces and town centre regeneration, and will include a visit to new-build council housing at Anne Mews and the creative industries hub at the Ice House Quarter. To register, please see our website.

Life Sciences in Whitechapel

The Truth About Networking
On 28th May, we visited Whitechapel with Queen Mary University of London and LB Tower Hamlets to hear about the delivery phase of the Whitechapel Vision masterplan and the growth of the life sciences sector. Read the summary and view presentations on our website. We followed this with a visit to Croydon on 16th June – a summary will be available shortly.

Future London Leaders

London 2050: Capturing Value
Future London Leaders Round 9 wrapped on 17th June with PechaKucha-style presentations on how to safeguard London's cherished places. Ideas included co-ordinated governance for the Thames, protection of employment space, and more orange trees! Thanks to all candidates and mentors, and we look forward to seeing you in the Alumni Network!
