April Update – Crossrail, anyone?

Hello all -

Time has raced by as we prepare for the April 23rd launch of our Crossrail as Catalyst report. Kudos to Jennifer and Alexei for a massive effort on interviews, research and report prep; if we survive the next week, we’ll all be at the spa (or sailing by Woodberry Down – see below).

We did surface long enough to hold our inaugural FutureTalk, a lively steering group debate on the ‘Grow up or Grow out?’ aspect of infrastructure planning that we’ll offer as a public event June 11th at City Hall. Keep an eye on our Events page for details on that and a June 17th field trip/seminar combo with a Dutch exchange group.

We've also had some board changes following Treasurer Neil Rousell's retirement from LB Enfield: welcome back to Stephen McDonald, Director of Place at LB Barnet and former FoL chair, and thanks to Ben Denton, Westminster Strategic Director for Housing, Regeneration and Property, who’s kindly stepped up as treasurer.

Hope you can join us for some of the interesting events below, and watch for the Crossrail as Catalyst downloadable report and exec summary, available April 23rd.

Thanks and see you out there!

Lisa Taylor

Programme Highlights

Communities in Transition: Under the Westway

Our Woodberry Down field trip is now full, but on May 29th, join us as new Future of London member Westway Development Trust hosts our next Communities in Transition field trip. We will explore WDT's work in North Kensington under the theme 'building community in difficult places'. Spaces are limited and registration is required – please email events@futureoflondon.org.uk.

Seminar series – Non-domestic retrofit

Retrofit for...
We are pleased to be working again with UCL's Grand Challenge of Sustainable Cities on a series of three seminars looking at non-domestic retrofit. These will address retrofit for environment (May 7th), heritage (May 13th), and health (May 19th). All seminars run from 5.30-7pm; sign up to these events through the Eventbrite links on the event page.

Public health breakfast seminars

Breakfast Seminar
After the success of Embedding health in London boroughs, our Spring series continues with  Food and Health: Cross-sector resources on April 30th, and Poverty, inequality and health on May 15th. These seminars examine how practitioners can integrate public health across policy areas, and are kindly hosted by Arup – see here for details, and register interest at events@futureoflondon.org.uk.

FLL: Round 6 graduation

FLL6 Graduation
On March 19th, candidates from Round 6 of Future London Leaders celebrated completing the course at a graduation kindly hosted by Pollard Thomas Edwards. We once again thank FLL sponsor Lovell for their ongoing support and look forward to continuing to work with candidates through the alumni network – be sure to read FLL6 grad Andrew Dorrian's guest post for the FoL blog on density and growth!
