April update – doing more with less

Hello all -

Recovered from year-end yet? Whether it meant re-thinking or acceleration – or both – for your own team, a question being asked across the capital is how the public sector is meant to deliver on growing and shifting targets with fewer people and tighter budgets.

Future of London's 23rd June conference, Doing More with Less, is designed to help, with sessions ranging from the impact of business rate devolution to commercial partnerships -- for info or to request a place at the conference, email events@futureoflondon.org.uk.

In the meantime, FoL is plenty busy. This month, we kicked off our Workspace that Works programme in Dalston; held our second Climate Change Exposure roundtable; led an NLA breakfast on Estate Renewal; delivered two Housing Zones Network seminars; and launched Future London Leaders 13. Highlights and online briefings are below.

On 5th May, we'll also continue our work on Business Improvement Districts, with an info and networking session for the Farringdon-Clerkenwell-Holborn community. Feel free to sign up [Eventbrite link].

Save the date! The evening of 24th August at City Hall will be Future of London's first all-network meet-up, bringing together board and steering group, alumni, mentors, the diversity network, partners, associates, speakers and other 'Friends of FoL' for ideas and connections. Add it to your calendar and watch for details.

Finally, a warm welcome to new member Swan Housing.

Programme Highlights

Delivering Estate Renewal in London

Estate Renewal
On 8th April, Future of London director Lisa Taylor presented our estate renewal briefing at an NLA breakfast seminar, alongside speakers from LB Haringey, DCLG, Catalyst, Bilfinger GVA and Pollard Thomas Edwards. Watch a video of the event and download speakers' presentations here; you can download the briefing on our website.

Social Lettings Agencies

Social lettings agencies
Building on March's roundtable, our new briefing on Social Lettings Agencies takes stock of existing borough-led lettings agencies, and explores the potential of a cross-borough initiative, as mooted by London Mayoral candidate Sadiq Khan and the London Housing Commission. Download the paper from our website.

Future London Leaders Round 11

Future London Leaders 11
Round 11 of Future London Leaders graduated on 16th March, with candidates giving creative presentations on the essential leadership qualities of the new mayor of London in front of an invited audience. Candidates and mentors voted on their favourite presentations (see who won here!); the candidates now join our 225-strong alumni network.

Housing Zones: Poplar Riverside

Poplar Riverside
Our latest Housing Zones case study takes a look at Poplar Riverside in LB Tower Hamlets, where 10 sites have the potential to contribute up to 9,000 homes, including on two estate regeneration schemes. Alongside housing, interventions include improvements to access routes to nearby Canning Town. Read more on our website.
