March update – year-end [c]rush

Hello all –

Welcome to the end-of-year crunch, especially those of you who survived MIPIM!

FoL was in Cannes, at least in spirit, to launch our latest briefing, Inward Investment in London: the borough perspective, with an NLA panel featuring board directors Stewart Murray (GLA Planning) and Pat Hayes (LB Ealing), member Jo Negrini (LB Croydon) and briefing sponsors Jerome Frost of Arup and Leanne Tritton of ING Media. Our thanks to them, to members who kindly hauled and/or displayed FoL material at the event, and to Urban Graphics for turning out a great-looking report.

That report also featured early input from former FoL staffer Jennifer Johnson, now at JTP. Watch for her final contribution, Capturing Value, based on our last London 2050 roundtable, in the next bulletin.

SAVE THE DATE! Register soon for our Tuesday, 23rd June conference on Creating Resilient Town Centres. We’ll post the programme shortly, but a quick thanks to lead sponsor Arup and early co-sponsors GVA and Pollard Thomas Edwards for getting involved – and keeping it free of charge.

Finally, a warm welcome to new member Hyde Housing – and a heartfelt thanks to Visakha Sri Chandrasekera and Linda Faulkner at sponsor Lovell for being flexible hosts and to FoL chair David Lunts for stepping in to deliver my CIH Brighton talk when a family emergency called me overseas. Helpful for me, and doubtless much better value for the audience!

Best to all, and see you out there –

Programme Highlights

Communities in Transition

Wembley
Our first Communities in Transition field trip of 2015 will be to Wembley on 15th April. In keeping with the theme of 'anchor-led regeneration', we'll be looking at the impact of the national stadium on regeneration plans in the area, a major focus for growth in Brent. We'll hear about plans for the existing town centre as well as Quintain's 85ha Wembley Park development. See our website for details on how to register.

Inward investment at borough level

Inward Investment
11th March saw the launch of our new briefing, Inward Investment in London: the borough landscape, sponsored by ING Media and Arup. The report looks at key relocation factors and labour market trends, and provides snapshots of what three London boroughs are doing to attract inward investment. Read more and download the briefing here.

Estate Renewal: Thamesmead visit

Estate Renewal: Thamesmead
Our 5th March visit to Thamesmead offered a fascinating insight into plans for the estate and wider area from FoL members Peabody and Bexley. Peabody Director of Thamesmead Regeneration Ken Baikie led the tour and discussed estate renewal, the impact of Crossrail and the two new Housing Zones in the area – read a summary of the visit on our website.

Spotlight: Social value in Croydon

Communities in Transition
Our latest spotlight takes a look at social value commissioning in Croydon and how the 2013 Social Value Act is working in practice. Since producing its Social Value Toolkit, Croydon council has been using commissioning to get better value from its contracts, boosting the impact of investment, opening opportunities to charities and SMEs and prioritising the London Living Wage.
