Happy Holidays!

The Corvallis Sister Cities Association-Gondar (CSCA-G) wishes you and your family a peaceful and loving holiday season.  This holiday edition continues to highlight the amazing efforts of our two work groups and their respective impacts on improving the quality of life in our sister city, Gondar, Ethiopia.  We are also very grateful for those of you who continue to support our efforts, either through membership, volunteering, or generous donations.

But none of our work would be possible without our partners in Gondar.  To the staff of Bridge of Hope and Link Ethiopia, we also wish you a happy holiday season and a very prosperous new year.
NEWS from the Education
Work Group

Container Being Shipped to Gondar
Under the leadership of Ray William and Corvallis volunteers, a 20-foot container is being shipped to supplement education in Gondar. Among the many items being shipped are science supplies, equipment, and books along with 20 identical computers to replace those currently being used in the IT classroom for Tsadiku Yohannes Elementary School. Also, 100 boxes of books and science journals will encourage reading in public libraries including the new College of Agriculture and Natural Resource library at the University of Gondar. Our Portland partners, the Ethiopia Project led by Berhanu Tesema, are shipping 11,000 running shoes and jerseys for distribution at running events.  The shipment is being coordinated through the Amhara Development Agency and is expected to arrive spring, 2016.

Blackboard Upgrade

EWG is currently working with our Gondar partner, Link Ethiopia, to replace 10 blackboards and repair an additional 4 for Tsadiku Yohannes Elementary School.
Library and English Literacy Project Shows Major Improvements.
EWG and its Gondar partner, Link Ethiopia (LE), is entering into the last year of a 3-year library and literacy project in local Gondar schools. To grasp the depth of this project, here are some results to date:
  • 46 public schools participated with advance literacy and phonics training for teachers and students
  • 125 teachers and 46 librarians trained;  31 library certificates awarded.
  • 736 children assessed in reading achievement. Children in the project schools have increased their score by 21% on average, compared to 6% in other (control) schools, indicating that those with trained teachers are doing 15% better than they would have been without the project!
This project was made possible by a grant from the Waterloo Foundation ,  with additional funds provided from Corvallis Sister Cities Association-Gondar, Jolly Phonics, Inc., Sincil Sports College, and by fundraising from a number of Link schools.
