Organizational Update

2015 Annual Report coming soon!
Eight Syracuse youth are meeting weekly to design and implement a community improvement project this spring through the Syracuse chapter of Citizen U. CITIZEN U uses a CCE 4-H Signature Program, Youth Community Action (YCA), as a model for promoting civic engagement, workforce preparation, and asset development among youth. Pictured above, youth are engaging in team building exercises and researching community needs.

2016 Regional 4-H Horse Bonanza Day was held on Saturday, March 5th. 4-H Members from Onondaga, Oneida, Madison, and Herkimer counties gathered to compete at Horse Bowl and Hippology. Winning Junior and Senior individuals and teams will continue onto the State Level competitions, held at Cornell University on April 9th and the first Sunday of the 2016 NYS Fair. Horse Bonanza Day was featured in the Morning Ag Clips!

Agriculture

On February 19th, CCE hosted the Farmland Protection workshop. Participants learned the basics of farmland protection, conservation easements, site planning, commitment needed, importance of family relationships, and other factors in determining if farmland protection is “right for you.”

CommuniTree Stewards


Love learning about trees? Want to learn how to identify trees? How to plant and care for trees? Join the CommuniTree Stewards for a hands-on education and gain technical experience in urban tree management. 

We are currently accepting applications for the 2016 class of CommuniTree Steward volunteers!

Master Gardeners presented to Syracuse School District of nurses
on ticks and tick borne illnesses. 
  • March 22: Gardening 101 at Paine Library from 6 pm to 7 pm. Participants will learn the basics to vegetable gardening. This no-cost workshop is open to the public
Fruit Preservation 101
On February 24th, seven people learned the basics of Fruit Preservation including hot water bath canning, freezing, and dehydration, and how to make the most of our seasonal and regional bounties. Each person took home a freshly canned applesauce and cranberry sauce. Special thanks to the Brewerton Fire Hall for donating space for the workshop.
