A Prayer for Our Church

Rita Thiron, executive director of the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions, recently shared this prayer in response to events unfolding in the Church:

Heavenly Father,
in every age, you have been our refuge.
Yet again and still, we stand before you
asking for your protection on your holy Church.
For the victims of abuse and their families,
pour out your healing and your peace.
For the Bishops of this country,
continue to inspire their decisions,
and guide them with your Spirit.
For the thousands of good and faithful priests,
who have followed your call to serve you and your people in holiness,
sustain them by your grace.
For the faithful who are angry, confused, and searching for answers,
embrace them with your love,
restore their trust,
console them with your clear Gospel message,
and renew them with your sacraments.
We place our Church in your hands,
for without you we can do nothing.
May Jesus, our High Priest and true compass,
continue to lead her in every thought and action –
to be an instrument of justice,
a source of consolation,
a sacrament of unity,
and a manifestation of your faithful covenant.
Grant this through that same Jesus Christ, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God,  for ever and ever.

May we all continue the work of healing and for the safety of all of God's people.

New Parish Catechetical Leader Day

New DREs, youth ministers, pastoral associates, and other parish catechetical leaders are invited to attend this day-long event sponsored by the Office of Catechesis.

New leaders will have the opportunity to pray and network with one another, receive resources from the Office of Catechesis, and learn about the services the diocesan offices provide.

2018 Catechetical Sunday
Catechetical Sunday, set aside each year to acknowledge the work of those who pass on the faith in our parishes, will be celebrated on September 16, 2018. The USCCB has published a commissioning service for priests to use during Mass or as part of a separate prayer service to bless catechists and ask the Holy Spirit to be with them as they proclaim the Good News. We encourage your use of this blessing in your parishes and catechetical programs.

"At the end of a conversation, offer the person a pathway for a next step. This could mean showing them a welcome card, or a safer option a person is more likely to say “yes” to, simply offer your own contact information (i.e. email, phone #, whatever you prefer). This puts the ball clearly in their court and shows that you respect and trust their choice to follow up and get to know you more, versus giving their contact information to a total stranger at a new church."

"Our task as Christians is not to look for islands of leisure-for-contemplation exempt from the eddy and flow of work and suffering and death; were we to do that, Wordsworthianly and narcissistically to wander lonely as clouds gasping at the beauties of the cosmos (which are real and many, though damaged) and of ourselves (which are real and many, though damaged), we would become fascinated by phantasms."
