The latest updates on sustainability at Stanford

Save the Date for Celebrating Sustainability!

Stanford’s annual Earth Day event will be held on April 20 from 11am-1pm, and brings together over 30 campus partners to educate, inspire and empower the community to engage with sustainability. Learn about ways that you can get involved while enjoying artwork and music, and sample local, seasonal food courtesy of RD&E. This year’s event will highlight the individual actions we can all take to live sustainably with the introduction of My Cardinal Green, a new program offering personal recommendations and rewards for living sustainably. Introducing the Sustainable Stanford Awards

Sustainable Stanford is pleased to announce its inaugural awards program, which will recognize individuals for their work to advance campus sustainability and reduce Stanford’s environmental impact. The awards will formally acknowledge and reward champions for their dedication and support in spearheading change and implementing programs that directly influence the university’s environmental performance. More Ways to Cut Waste with Recyclemania

We’re entering our fifth week of Recyclamania, a campus-wide effort to reduce waste. Stanford has just three short years to meet the state’s waste diversion target of 75% by 2020 (our current diversion rate is 65%). Help us get the 10% - See more ways to get involved and pledge here.
Lab Recycling Bin Give-away Program

Campus labs can save an estimated 100 pounds of waste annually by recycling materials like paper, metal, and uncontaminated glass and plastics. The Cardinal Green Labs program offers free recycling bins to help labs reduce waste, and as part of Recyclemania, the Beckman Center will be hosting a lab-bin giveaway in the lobby at lunchtime on Tuesday, March 7. Stay tuned for more details on our upcoming Lab Share Event, this April 12. For more details, contact Rashmi (
Stanford Joins Green Power Partnership

Stanford is now a member of the EPA's Green Power Partnership program, which recognizes organizations that help support the development of new renewable generation capacity and help protect the environment. The Stanford Energy System Innovations (SESI) project, building efficiency standards, and the production of solar power all exemplify Stanford's commitment to energy efficiency and the use of innovative, clean, and renewable energy sources on campus. Sustainability Champion of the Month
Wesley Howell, Athletics
Wes has been a valuable advocate for sustainability in the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation. Last year, Wes coordinated a plug load energy management pilot in recreation center office spaces, which resulted in a 21% reduction in office plug loads in pilot buildings, and received considerable positive feedback from participants. Wes was a key partner in implementing the "Take the Shorter Shower Challenge" in rec center locker rooms, and most recently spearheaded the addition of composting bins in the Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation (ACSR). Thanks to Wes, paper towels and food waste can now be collected in compost bins throughout the gym area and restrooms in the ACSR.
