Martin Luther King Day Brings Time of Reflection

CLEVELAND, TN:   In remembrance of the life of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the General Overseer of the Church of God, Dr. Timothy M. Hill, issued the following statement:

“Some 53 years ago, Dr. King challenged our country to dream with him of a nation where freedom and equality replaced slavery and hatred. With a few simple but profound phrases, Dr. King encouraged our nation to make our future brighter than our past - but he clearly noted that if that was going to happen, it was going to take all of us coming together to fight the ills of our nation. In referencing Psalms 30:5, Dr. King pointed out that while ‘weeping may endure for a night, joy was coming in the morning.’

Dr. King’s challenging words still ring true to us today as we as the church continue to push for equality and justice for all. It has been said that the most segregated hour of the week is worship time on Sunday morning. That should not be. The Church of God’s focus on the FINISH Commitment in completing the Great Commission is about making disciples of ALL people and nations, regardless of race, creed, color, or ethnicity.

There is no doubt that the words of Jesus in John 10:10 – ‘I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly’ – was meant for everyone, not just a few. So as we take time on this day to reflect on the life and words of Dr. King, my prayer is that we will all join together to make sure that every man, woman, and child can hear of the love of Jesus Christ – our Lord and Savior and our soon coming King. The FINISH Commitment to the Great Commission requires no less of us.”
