Counting Down to the 1st UTeach Alumni Conference


Plans are in high gear for UTeach in the Real World, the 1st UTeach Alumni Conference, to be held July 11 in Austin. Check out what's in store for you, and register by May 31 to get the Early Bird Rate.
  • 13 professional learning sessions created for you by other alumni of UTeach programs across the country, designed to bring you back to your roots in UTeach.
  • Keynote speaker Katey Arrington will talk about how you can impact the forces shaping STEM education through leadership roles and participation in professional organizations.
  • Resources to help get you to the conference include a downloadable flyer to give your principal to help get funding for registration.
  • Welcome Reception at Aloft Austin at The Domain on July 10, the evening before the conference, will give you the chance to connect with new and old friends from UTeach programs across the country.
  • Join an informal group outing to explore Austin and get to know fellow UTeach alumni before the conference starts.
Hotel Information
A block of rooms has been reserved for UTeach Alumni Conference attendees at Aloft Austin at the Domain at a rate of $149 for check in on July 10 and check out on July 11. Use the group code UTCG10 to reserve online or to reserve by phone at 866-932-7660 by June 12. A free shuttle will run between Aloft and the Commons Learning Center.

Alumni News

Allie Autrey, Michelle Burroughs, and Heather Fertig, FSU-Teach alumni, published "Student Struggles: Solving for Missing Angle Measures" in the May 2013 issue of the Journal of the Association of Teachers in Mathematics.

Tim Ellis, UKanTeach alumnus, was named a 2014 Knowles Teaching Fellow, a five-year fellowship designed to help teachers become leaders to improve math and science education and strengthen the teaching profession.

Kelly Kluthe and Matt Sturgeon, UKanTeach alumni, are adapting the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to fit the needs of their district in Kansas City, Kansas, including recommended labs and activities that can be used in line with NGSS.

Lauren Michalson, UKanTeach alumna, received a grant from the Auburn Washburn Schools Foundation to purchase a document camera for her classroom.
Veronica Twining, UTeach Austin alumna and math teacher at Fulmore Middle School in Austin, Texas, was among 30 winners of Farmers Insurance's "Thank a Million Teachers" program, a national initiative providing $2,500 grants to teachers.

Kristin Wilson, FSU-Teach alumna and a second-year math teacher at Salem High School in Conyers, Georgia, was elected by the top 10 students at the school as an Honor Teacher who positively and academically influenced them.

Meet Your Alumni Representative on the new UTeach STEM Educators Association Board

This spring a new professional association for UTeach was born! The new UTeach STEM Educators Association (USEA) is dedicated to developing STEM liMariam Manuelteracy for all students through innovation and excellence in university-based teacher education.

Members of the association will include UTeach programs at universities across the country and their alumni. The inaugural Executive Board was appointed last month and includes Mariam Manuel, alumna of teachHOUSTON and science instructional coach for Katy Independent School District in Houston. She is very excited to represent your voice on the board, and she's "thrilled to be partnered with such an outstanding group of educators striving to create a community built on support and collaboration among the STEM educators of today and those of tomorrow."

"As an alumna," Mariam added, "I look forward to providing a unique and valuable perspective on the needs of our graduates and pre-service teachers in an effort to ensure they are well trained and equipped with resources that will allow them to succeed in the challenging and ever-changing field of STEM education."

Did you know thOh Yes It's Freeat Google can filter your searches by usage rights? If you're looking for an image to use in classroom materials or for a presentation, this helps you filter out copyright images.
  1. Do a Google search and then click on "Images" at the top.
  2. Then click on the gear icon on the top right and select "Advanced Search."
  3. Scroll down the page and under "Then narrow your results by..." you have an option to filter by "Usage Rights."
  4. Filter your search items by "free to use or share."
  5. Voila!

Congratulations to the Class of 2014 and welcome to the National UTeach Alumni Network!

This spring about 350 students graduated from 27 UTeach programs across the country. We now have more than 2,100 UTeach alumni in the national network!

We look forward to getting to know you and welcoming you into your extended UTeach family.

New NMSI UTeach Teacher of the Year Award to Honor You!

The National Math + Science Initiative (NMSI) is honoring UTeach alumni with a new award: UTeach Teacher of the Year.

To recognize great STEM teaching and learning, NMSI has created this award for alumni of UTeach programs who have taught at least one year and will be employed in a K-12 school or district during the 2014-2015 school year.

Applicants must submit an essay on how the UTeach program prepared you to teach and inspire your students. You also need a supporting letter from a UTeach faculty member or master teacher, your school principal, or a student's parent.

Finalists will be treated to a special evening honoring your outstanding leadership and accomplishments. Applications are due September 5. Learn more.
