Golf Australia Presentation : Today, Tomorrow & the Future

Mark Bamford (State Director) & Jayne Young (Regional Liaison) presented an informative session on the ‘Strategy for Australian Golf’ and the movement to the future of golf.

The members in attendance were informed and challenged in their thoughts on golf and how we can capture it better as a club.

It was an opportunity for members to see what is happening, ‘Over the fence’ and how we can be better as a golf club to capture ‘the market’. There will be decisions made in the coming months which are reflective of the Strategic Plan and information from the night, as we move to be a progressive club with forward thinking and inclusive participation opportunities for members and the public.

SNAP SHOTS FROM THE MEETING
Golf Australia’s Strategy
Purpose - More Australians playing more golf.
Philosophy - All golf is golf and all of us can be golfers. Golf course, driving range, mini golf, simulators.
Positioning – A sport for life and fun for all.
Our membership growth of 9.58% is in the top 10 for Victoria, but golf membership accounts for only 12% of golf in Australia. (Golf being competition, social, driving range, mini golf, simulators)
Ladies Membership National average 22%, we are at 15%, but Red Cliffs is 35%
Junior numbers in the district is alarming, but we have started to capture this market.
What is the main reason people play golf? Over 50% of people said fun, so how can we capture them?

Attract New Golfers
Multi Day Comps / Multi Gender Comps / Multi Tee Comps / 9 hole comps
Short Game Formats, Social Time (2hrs)
One Tee Starts / Gender Equity Prizes
Green Fee Players – Are we a ‘Public Golf Course?’, when do they play, play during competitions.
Social Engagement / Social Play

Grow Our Core
Strategy for Women & Children – pathways programs
Member Retention / Social & Non-Golf Activities
What do the members want? What does the community want?
Sponsor Offerings
Member Recognition – Milestones / Capped Handicapped Players / Check-ins on players not playing.

Tell Our Story Better
How can we tell how story better?
Who are we? What do we stand for?
We are a public access course, so how do we capture?
Local community & groups
Ethnicity
Lowering the average age and balancing gender balance
Social golfers – green fee players
How do we attract sponsors and support the sponsors?
Do we recognise our workforce? Paid and volunteers
As a golf club we will continue to be progressive and make decisions that we see will be moving forward as a club and community.

Club Competitions – Monday & Wednesday
The club is making the move to be more inclusive and progressive with our competition play.

From the 1st August the Monday and Wednesday competitions will move to ‘Member Competitions’ (formerly Medley) and be inclusive for all members and visitors.
Monday: Member Veterans & Friends Stableford (White & Red Tees)
Wednesday: Member & Visitors Stableford (Blue & Red Tees)
Sunday: Members & Visitors Stableford (White, Red & Orange Tees)
Competitions will remain the same format in relation to competition cost, gradings and allocation of prizes.

We would like to welcome the following members to Riverside.
Jayben McManus, Ben Erskine, Andrew Nicholds, Glen Walker, Laurence Leehane, Brent Harmer, Rowan Lawn, Scott Robinson, Rory Nutter, Ryan Hawke, Jayden Smith, Brian Lane, Max Castleman & Xavier Erskine.

Please make them welcome and if you see them on the time sheet, think about joining them.

New Sponsors
We have a new sponsor on board in KN Commercial Construction and Rory Nutter has taken out a Birdie sponsorship package with signage to be placed on the 12th Ladies Tee.
We would also like to thank Storage King for their recent donation of 500 Sand Buckets.

Busy Month of May
May was a very busy and successful month for the club, we kicked off with the annual visit from the S.A. Metro Veterans with 240 players who played 2 rounds at Riverside.

This was followed by the Monaghan Truck & Trailers Riverside Open Tournament on the 7th and 8th, which was a great success with an exciting playoff between Greg Rhodes and Ashley Whitehouse.

On Friday 13th we had the LM&H S.A. Veterans, another 80 players, followed by the Tri-State Masters on Tue 17th and Wed 18th, 170 players.

All events were a great success with fantastic feedback regarding the excellent condition of our great course.

Many thanks must go out to the ladies committee, especially Selma Mayne and her loyal band of ladies plus Michael Nott, who did a tremendous job in catering for these events with great feedback received from those that played. Thanks also to Ken Upton, John Denman, Don Male, Barry Pilgrim, Noel Murray, Rob Arnold, Brian Young, Heather Gardiner & Kaye Drew who donated their time to be Hole in One scrutineers during the Tri-State Masters Event. The assistance of these volunteers is what makes our club great.

Pre-Loved Golf Balls
Thank you to those members that have dropped of used/unwanted golf balls to the club, these have been very welcomed, we can always use more, so if any other members have used golf balls weighing down their bags or in buckets in the shed, please drop them out to the club for recycling, thank you.

Club Events
The club is looking to instigate club social events again.
The kitchen has recently had the additions of a new deep fryer and griddle, so we are operational for meals. We will be looking to organise meals on Fridays maybe once or twice a month but require people to assist with cooking and serving of meals.

There are many opportunities for social events to happen. Do we have members who are willing to be involved in the organising and running events? We would be aiming for an event every 2 months
If you have any ideas on events that could be held or are willing to assist with the organising/running these events or be willing to assist in the kitchen with meals, please let Clubhouse staff know of your interest.

Working Bee – Removal & Installation of Internal Roofing Tiles Sunday 17th July  11am
Several people have commented on the condition of the internal roof in the clubhouse. We have now located internal roofing tiles to be fitted.

There will be a working bee at the club on Sunday 17th July from 11:00am. The club will supply safety gloves, glasses and other tools required to complete the job. If you have a platform ladder, could you please bring this to assist with the changeover.

There will be a BBQ and complimentary drink available after the working bee.

Men’s Club Championships
This year the Men’s Club Championships will be played over 4 Stroke rounds.
Players will have the option of qualifying on a Wednesday if you prefer or if are unavailable on the Saturday during the first 3 rounds.

If you are playing on Saturday for all your rounds you will only be required to register to play each day in the competition.

If you are playing on a Wednesday as a qualifying round for Round 1, 2 or 3 you will be required to email Craig Jervies – Vice Captain (jervs8@yahoo.com) before 6pm on Tuesday 9th August outlining the Wednesdays you will be playing in lieu of a Saturday.

Eg: I will be playing Rd 1 & 2 on Wednesdays 10th & 17th instead of the Saturdays. Rd 3 I will be playing the Saturday.

The 4th & Final Round will be played on Sunday 28th August with seeded groups.

All players will be required to pay for the Club Championships prior to the first round. ($50 which includes daily competitions) No payment will be received after your first round has begun.

Both days of each round the course will be set up in a similar manner. The tees will be the same. The holes will be required to be recut but will be in a similar position for each day.

Ladies’ Club Championships
As we are writing this the Ladies are in the middle of their Club Championships.

They have adapted their competition to include 2 days to qualify during the first 2 rounds to try and capture more members to qualify.

The first round saw some good golf being played across the grades and some very close competition.

The final round will be played on Thursday 7th July, with presentations after the event.
Ladies’ Visitors Day
The Ladies held a Visitors Day which was well organised, well supported and a huge success. 68 ladies participated in a 4BBB competition with visitors from Red Cliffs, Mildura & Coomealla.

The winners were Linda Dickson & Rose Barich with 45 points.

Thank you to the sponsors on the day and the ladies who assisted with the organising.

Ladies’ Open – Thursday 11th August
The Ladies 27 hole Open will be held on Thursday 11th August. There will be an 18-hole competition as well on the day. More details closer to the event.

Course Rating
Recently the Match Committee communicated with Golf Australia to look at the current course rating against the recent history of scoring across Mens and Ladies competitions.

Originally when the course was rated by Golf Australia it was noted that the courses fairways were predominantly kikuyu, but made a minor adjustment in relation to roll.

Now with the course looking amazing and the kikuyu lush, this has significantly impacted the roll on the course.

The course has had the following changes to the 18 hole courses:
Mens Blue Tees - 120 to 124                   Ladies Blue Tees – to come
Mens White Tees - 118 to 119                   Ladies White Tees - 126 to 132
Mens Red Tees - 108 to 110                      Ladies Red Tees - 122 to 126
Mens Orange Tees - 87 to 88                    Ladies Orange Tees - 100 to 102

Though it looks minor changes, you may see a difference in your handicap by a shot for the better.

From the Greens Keeper Shed

The course is looking amazing, and we continue to receive great feedback on the condition of the course.

The toilet next to the 14th tee will be operational again very soon.
After beginning the cutting back branches around the course last winter, this will again be ramping up in the coming weeks.

A new mini ramp will be installed near the 1st tee for players to walk up, rather than the step to move from the Practice Green/Blue Tees and onto the path.

Plans are in place and ready for the installation of 4 new greens once the Club Championships have been completed. New greens will be built on the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 13th. Temporary greens will be in place like previous years, but the match committee will hold off to see if there is a huge difference in scores and whether to instigate a temporary course rating.

Committee Meeting Minutes

The Committee Meeting Minutes are available to all members in a folder near the bar. The most recent minutes will be added after being ratified and accepted at the following meeting.

PLEASE WELCOME OUR NEW SPONSORS

Social Opportunities

The club is looking to ramp up social functions and events. This could be social functions in the clubhouse, an idea for an event on the course or just a random idea for people to enjoy.

If you have any ideas and if you want to assist with staging functions, please forward them to a member of staff or a committee member.
