Riverside GC – Annual General Meeting

Our AGM will be held on Tuesday 30 November 2021
at 7pm in the Club House.

All Committee Positions are vacated.

In accordance with Golf Australia’s gender equality (Female participation) best practice guidelines we would love to see a minimum 60 – 40 gender split.

That would see a minimum of 5 men or 5 women on a
12 person Committee.

Riverside Golf Club Departing Committee Members

It is with regret the committee are farewelling four of our members.

Alan Connolly has been our president for the past 2 years. He has done a wonderful job in guiding the club through Covid and the various other issues the club has encountered.

As you all know, Riverside Golf Club has been Al’s second home. He has been out here 7 days a week for years either playing golf or working with the greens staff to maintain our course and surrounds. On top of that Al & May volunteered for 18 months to open up each Sunday morning. What a huge effort! Al will be sorely missed.

May Connolly is also leaving to accompany Al on their next adventure. May has been captain for the past 2 years after Linda Young moved to Adelaide. Given she was elevated to the position with little experience, May has acquitted herself very well. Once we throw Covid into the mix, she has had a full time job keeping abreast of the various changes to playing conditions, plus changing & setting up competitions on short notice. As well as volunteering on Sundays to open up, May has regularly volunteered for the bistro.

The club offers Al & May their sincere thanks & wish them happy travelling. We look forward to catching up when they are in town.

Maeve Fraser has been the club secretary for the past 2 years. Maeve is a long time member at Riverside and has been an invaluable member of our committee. All correspondence & minutes have been professionally prepared in a timely manner.

Thank you Maeve for your important contribution to the club.

Finally we farewell Pat Riordan from our committee. Pat is also a long term member, and former Vice Captain. She has been on the committee for several years in the capacity of secretary for 2 years, Chair of the House Sub Committee organising Friday night bistros as well the general catering for the club. For the past 2 years Pat has also taken on the role of Grants Facilitator. Pat has successfully applied for in excess of $72,000 in funding for the club. On top of that, Pat co-ordinated the Move It program which has seen several participants joining the club and other participants continuing to visit the club to enjoy the ambience of our course.

Thank you Pat for your huge contribution to the club over the years in your various roles.

On behalf of May and I we would like to thank everyone at Riverside for their understanding.

We will always regard Riverside as our home club as we have a great memories and friends associated with it.

However the time has come to explore new fields and let our hearts direct us, who knows where we might end up.

Motorised Carts Parking Area 
The club has recently condensed the parking for Committee Members, resulting in a larger parking area for motorised golf carts.

Members and visitors are requested to park in this area.

Parking on the pavers near the clubhouse is for carts calling into the Clubhouse for refreshments moving between front and back 9s.

After your round could all motorised carts please be moved to the Buggy Parking Area.

As we move into summer the grass in front of the picket fence is starting to discolour due to the traffic of carts driving and parking in this area.

Could all carts please move along the constructed concrete path leading to the clubhouse.

Riverside GC Junior Academy – Update

After another covid restricted two weeks, We finally finished our first block of junior clinic with great success!!!!

Our final lesson saw the kids turn up very eager to get back on the range to hit ball. Clearly most of them had been practicing throughout our lock down as we noticed great improvement from our last lessons.

They were all very happy to finally get their drivers out, tee up the ball and hit some bombs. After 20min minutes going through the process of hitting the driver they were all very keen to get out on the course and put all their practise into play.

They played 3 holes teeing off the 16th hole in a Ambrose format. I have to tell you how amazed the coaches were to see how well they have all progressed. We finished the round on the 18th  then up for a sausage sizzle and presentations.

At the start of the lessons we announced that there would be a prize for the most improved student.. This student started the lessons without even picking up a golf club. To watch him progress and improve week after week. Without a doubt he was the most improved and gives me great pleasure to announce that the winner was Billy Cumming. Congratulations to Billy. He won himself a push buggy that was kindly donated by Barry Pilgrim.

I just wanted to share a message that we received from the other of one the students. Comments like this make these lessons all worthwhile, and this is why we enjoy taking the time to run these clinics.

Covid Restriction Thank you

The Committee has acknowledged the urgent work of Staff, Craig Jerves, Wayne Innes and Michael Holcroft in getting advice to members at very short notice regarding the changes to the Covid 19 restrictions on 22 October 2021.

We have been following the advice of Golf Australia.  Unfortunately, we had to “go it alone” with this one and the Victorian Health Dept did not confirm the position with Golf Australia until 9:30pm that evening.

Thankfully the Golf Australia position was close to the one that we advised.

The Committee has resolved to continue adhering to the Golf Australia guidelines and we thank all member for their compliance and understanding.

We are all looking forward to further easing of restrictions around 24 November 2021 (the 90% double vaxed date).

Tankard Dental Mens Championships
27/28 November & 4/5 December
Tankard Dental Men's Club Championship is being held over 2 consecutive weeks and all 4 rounds counting towards the respective Grade Champions.
Booking sheets will be made available from the Saturday November 6th for all 4 rounds. Cost is $50 which is to be paid prior to Round 1 to be eligible for Championship Awards.

Zilzie Platinum Twilight Thursday – re-started 28th October
This is a 9-hole Stableford social event starting from 2pm each Thursday. This is open to all players whether you have a handicap or not.
Cost is $5 for members and $10 for visitors.

We continue to strive for social events and competitions for members, knowing the current climate restricts these happening, but we will continue to create the opportunities.

Thank you to all members who have rejoined for the new 2021/2022 membership year, the club really appreciates your continued support after what has been another difficult year.  Hopefully in the year ahead we will be back to some sort of normality and will be able to conduct our regular major events as

Any members that have not rejoined at this point need to be aware that OneGolf will suspend their handicap and access to the OneGolf system as at the 1st of November, this can be reactivated upon becoming financial again.

If any un-financial members wish to utilise the monthly direct debit payment system, please see the club staff and we can arrange this process for you.

Don't forget that members competition prizes are now allocated to your new members card, just a reminder that if you wish to change that for a sponsors voucher you can still do so, just see the staff and we can arrange that for you at any time.

Club logo apparel - keep an eye out, new stock of shirts/ peak hats and bucket hats will be arriving in the next week just in time for you to upgrade before the warmer weather gets here.

Monthly Medal shirts, if members wish to have their monthly medal shirts embroidered, select the shirt you wish to purchase with the voucher you will be given and let the staff know and we will arrange embroidery for you.

with the staff in relation to Covid compliance checking, especially over
that couple of weeks, it has made our job of following government
regulations and restrictions much easier, we really appreciate the support
you have all shown, thank you.

From the Green Keepers Shed
Tim Peterson – Club Greenskeeper

The course remains in good condition considering the works that it has had on it.  I believe we are still in a good position going into the growing season which seems to have arrived.

The new Greens continue to improve and are covering over well, we started mowing them mid October and by doing this will encourage the plants to grow sideways and spread.  I am currently treating the new greens with the same machinery and programs I am with all the other greens on course, which is a sign they aren't far away from open.  We will do some finishing touches to the greens, new bunkers, and surrounds and I plan to have them open during the first couple of weeks in November.  This will give players a couple of weeks to learn them before Club Championships.

Renovations were successful on the remaining Greens, and now with the ground temperature rising they will go ahead leaps and bounds.

After renovations our attention turned to the Tees as requested,  we scarified, top dressed, fertilised and continue to monitor their reaction to the works, so far they have responded really well.  I believe they are thinner, a lot more level and the new growth is obvious.  These works will only help to improve Riverside Golf Club.

Fencing has been erected around the around the back of the 1st to direct Carts, also along the 12th surround, thank you to Craig Jervis for putting in the time to make the fencing up. Directional signage for the 2nd, 11th, and 7th is currently being made up, I have had conversations with David Lloyd and I thank him for his time and efforts.  

Red gum sleepers and hedging plants have been donated to the club by Zilzie Wines which I am very thankful for.  I plan on defining the garden bed behind the 1st green with the sleepers which will finish the area off nicely.  The hedge has gone into the 1st Tee box which looks good and coincided with one of Ash's units required for his apprenticeship so it was a win, win.

There has been a few limbs removed from the course to open up a few holes,  I haven' t heard any negative feedback which is pleasing because I believe it improves the presentation of Riverside.  Thank you Ash Robinson, Rob Lambert, Peter Schroder, and again Craig for their help in these works.

Thank you to Ray Cottle, John Denman, and Gary Sharman for their continued support and volunteering their time each week to help out with the course up keep.

Going forward I will be feeding the fairways and roughs,  I believe the fairways and roughs will really take off and hold us in a good position going into Christmas.  I will also be spreading some of the left over dirt from the old greens into the roughs and uneven areas, this will give the grass some fresh soil to grow into and has proven successful in the past.

New hedge plantings for 1st Tee

From Saturday 6th Nov

The committee has been discussing the use of 2 tees on SATURDAYS ONLY - morning/afternoon times for a number of meetings (its in the minutes), but due to COVID restrictions this has not been able to happen (density limits).

From Saturday the 6th of November we will be moving to 2 tees (1st and 10th) with am & pm time slots and 7 minute intervals.
** This is effective on SATURDAYS ONLY**

The morning times will be from 7:15am - 9:15am.  Starting from the 1st tee will be Members, Members Guests and Visitors playing in the competition. The 10th tee will be for Green Fee Players.

The afternoon times will start from 11:30am - 1:30am with both the 1st and 10th tee available to Members, Members Guests and Visitors playing in the competition.

From 3:30pm tees will be made available for Green Fee players, with all motorised carts to be returned before 7pm.

Club staff are to use their discretion in regards to booking green fee players during the day if positions are available. 

Eg: If a group of 4 rings asking on a Thursday for a Saturday tee time at 12:30pm and there are minimal bookings at this time, the group will be made aware it is a club competition day and the responsibilities of them playing during this time.


The ladies rounded off the year on the 28th of October with their end of season 3 ball, best ball competition. A fantastic day was reported by all.
