EDITION 7 MAY 2022

President's Piece

Welcome to the May Newsletter

Tim, Ash, Thommo (with help from Stinga) presented the course in magnificent fashion. Visiting golfers commented that the fairways were as good as they have seen at Riverside. The greens were quick and true, as they should be for our Open Event.

Thanks to the Match Committee and David, Mick, Lynda and Peter.

Also, thanks to our sponsors who are detailed below.

Community Instructors

We have already had a few expressions of Interests for the Golf Australia Community Instructor’s course and information date to be held on 19 June 2022 – venue yet to be advised

Anyone interested should check out: www.golf.org.au/communityinstructor

The on-line course needs to be competed prior to 19.6.2022 for you to participate on the day, and numbers are required before hand for catering purposes.

Committee Succession

The Committee would like to hear from people who might be interested in joining the Committee at the next AGM.  Expressing an interest early will provide a chance to attend committee meeting as an invited observer and see the work that your committee does for the club.

If you have an interest then let me know or email David Gardiner at admin@riversidegolfclub.net

I look forward to hearing from you.

Junior Development

The Riverside GC continues to develop their Junior program to encourage juniors to the game of golf. Murray Darling Golf Association and Golf Australia, Golf Victoria continue to be great support of golf in the Sunraysia and Victoria. Recently the Murray Darling Golf Association supported the Riverside GC with a grant that has been used towards junior golf at Riverside GC.

The club has recently established a Junior '18 hole Orange Course' which is rated by Golf Australia and can be played by players with an official handicap. This allows Juniors to play on a course that is designed to be shorter, but allows the player to learn the game of golf.

Term 2 'My Golf' clinics are now available to register. For further information or to register : LINK

This is a 5 week clinic run on Sunday mornings. This is limited to 20 participants and has been popular, so book in now.

Registration for Term 3 & 4 clinics will be available by the end of the week.

If you have any further questions please contact Jason Marks (contact details in the link above) .

Syllabus Update

Having moved into the position of Club Captain and leading the Match Committee, we have been guided by an outdated Syllabus (2017 last known publication), but thanks to many caring members we have been guided by their knowledge.

We will make changes that will not satisfy all and make mistakes, but we are looking to make changes for the better of golf at Riverside Golf Club.

We are going with what we know and feel, looking to be proactive and move the Riverside Golf Club forward as a destination golf club in the Sunraysia, that is leading the change to making golf a game for all involved at Riverside Golf Club, rather than satisfying pockets of members.

We are in the process of updating the Syllabus and this will be made available to Members on the website and notice boards when completed.

Grades & Grading

Recently the Committee discussed the Grades and Grading for competitions for all 18 Competitions held at Riverside Golf Club.

A few things have changed since the 2017 publication of the Syllabus, so we felt it appropriate to make the appropriate changes. These have included:

   - The handicap system

   - Loading of the handicaps within the club. (GA Handicaps)

      (65 members from +3 – 9.9)

      (171 members from 10 – 19.9)

      (186 members from 20 – 29.9)

      (80 members 30+)

   - Ability to have technology to organise competitions

As a committee it has been decided going forward:

All Club 18 Hole Competitions:

0-5 players – no competition (competition fee refunded)

      6-30 players – 1 Grade

      31-70 players – 2 Grades

      71+ players – 3 Grades

Gradings

Gradings will be calculated using a percentage system (to the nearest percentage relevant and as decided by the Captain)

2 grades – 50/50 split of the field by handicap.

3 grades – 33/33/33 split of the field by handicap

This will be used for all 18 hole Competitions at Riverside Golf Club.

Mens Monthly Medal Gradings

Monthly Medal will be played across 3 Grades with 33/33/33 split of the field by handicap.

Mens Club Championships

Club Championships will be played across 3 Grades.

Grades will be split 33/33/33 after Round 1 registrations close for competitors entered across the 4 rounds.

Handicaps for Grades will be published with Round 1 results.

Programming

When we looked at the program, we felt that there was a saturation of Stableford events and had feedback from members, that they would like to see some difference in the fixtures.

We have had a plan for Wednesday and Saturdays to rotate through the month with a Stroke round, Par round and 2 Stableford rounds.

Eg: 1st Sat – Stableford, 2nd Sat – Par, 3rd Sat – Stableford, 4th Sat – Stroke

We have also looked at making the 5th Saturday or Wednesday a competition of difference and these have included: Stableford Waltz, 2 & 4 person Ambrose, 4 BBB competitions, Orange Tee Stableford, ‘Pick your Tee’ Stableford and other events.

Riverside Golf Club Open

The Riverside GC would like to thank all who supported the Open this year. With over 260 players over the 2 days and 10 golf clubs represented it has proven to be another successful event.
Thank you to Monaghan Truck & Trailer Sales and Trek Hardware 4x4 Superstore Mildura and Zilzie Wines for their continued support of the Riverside Golf Club and sponsoring the Riverside Open.
With many commenting on the condition of the course it is a credit to our Ground staff for the hard work and commitment they have made over the last 18 months for the course to be looking and playing so well.
Thank you to the Clubhouse staff and the many volunteers who assisted with the organising of the event and the running of the event over the weekend.
The 36 hole championship needed to go down to a playoff with Greg Rhodes and Ash Whitehouse locked on 143 (1 over). The playoff lasted one hole with Greg Rhodes taking the Championship this year.
The Ladies Champion for 2022 was Sue Laird who was consistent with scores of 78 & 79 over the 2 days.

Results for all grades can be found on our website - LINK

From The Course - Tim Peterson (Superintendent)

The Golf Course remains to be in a good condition, I have noticed a lot more visitors around the club and the feedback remains very positive.

Renovations took place as planned and the greens have recovered very well with a healthy grass coverage and damaged areas from the summer recovering well. With some drying out of the greens leading into the tournament they should be in good condition for our Open.

I have received and dropped fertilizer on the fairways, surrounds, tees and some rough areas, timing was spot on as we received 45ml of rain Easter Monday night and the Tuesday morning. The results will hold us in good position going into the winter months.

The new Kubota Mower has arrived and looks a very impressive machine, thank you for efforts to make this happen for the club.

Thank you to my staff including Stinga, there has been a fair bit going on the last few months and they continue to consistently provide a pretty good product for the golfers to play on.
