Growing up in wartime

Dear supporter,

We know some of you will be receiving this in local lockdown. Sometimes it feels as if this crisis will never end, but this must be how our older generation felt during the war, which was, of course, so much worse and blighted their young lives for years.

The war finally came to an end 75 years ago in 1945, leaving mass devastation in its wake. We mark this terrible time with a fascinating collection of wartime memories from some of our guests in north London. We're sure you'll agree that these accounts, collected by Re-engage volunteers, become more valuable with every year that passes.

As the current crisis continues to hit this generation hard, never has there been a greater need for meaningful social contact. With this in mind, we also feature an inspiring experience from one of our longtime volunteers who, spurred on by the lockdown, took on a new role as a call companion coordinator.

Spurred on by the lockdown and the suspension of our tea parties, longtime Re-engage volunteer, Bob Jones, sought out a new way to help older people.

Just in case you missed it...
After receiving a Knighthood from the Queen last month, the honours keep coming for the nation's favourite 100-year-old. Captain Sir Tom Moore was made honorary colonel of an army college in North Yorkshire earlier this week and told the students, 'Without climbing over anyone's shoulders, just quietly get on and do your best and be your best.'
