Being a Feather

A couple of weeks ago, right before my birthday, I visited a few of my favorite bookstores so that I could make a wish list of books for the year ahead. I had a gift certificate and decided I'd purchase a new tarot deck. But on the way out I passed a new hardcover by one of my favorite authors, Mark Nepo. I dropped the tarot deck (truly unheard of if you know me!) and bought his new book, a book of poems, instead.

I read Mark Nepo's work as if it were an oracle. I keep a stack of his books nearby, choose one, close my eyes, open to a random page and take my "medicine" for the day. His words are always a balm for my spirit. So while I've been going through the process of creating the Death offerings for this month, I was touched by this poem that speaks so tenderly of holding and releasing grief, gain and loss, ups and downs, descent and return, pain and healing...

Being a Feather
- Mark Nepo, The Way Under the Way - Three Books of Poems

He sat quietly
as his father went silent.
Sometimes, his father
would look far off and
the shape of his eyes
would sag, and he knew
his father was carrying
the things that burn
where no one can speak.

It was then that the feather
appeared. He tried to guess
if it was hawk or crow or
maybe heron, but his father
said, "It doesn't matter
from which flying thing
it comes. What matters
is that it carries us back
and forth into the life above
and the life below."

His father held the feather
as if it were his own,
"It carries us into sky life,
then ground life until
both are home."

His father placed the feather
in his hands, "Anything
that connects above and
below is such a feather.
The quiet is such a feather.
Pain is such a feather.
Friendship is such a feather.
The things that burn
where no one can speak
is such a feather. You
are such a feather."

Journaling prompt: What have you been carrying that has carried you, like a feather, from descent to return in your life?
