Yielding to Light
"When our souls like little suns express the light of who we are, we emanate what Jesus called love and what Buddha called compassion, and the roots of community lengthen. In this way, without any intent to shape others, we simply have to be authentic, and a sense of mana, of spiritual light and warmth, will emanate from our very souls, causing others to grow – not towards us, but toward the light that moves through us."
- Mark Nepo
I have not found adequate words to describe how the national events of the past couple of weeks have affected me. It's felt like a massive heavy cloud over my entire being. I am a woman of color. I was raised in a community that beautifully overflowed with other people of color. We had a lot in common, including growing up experiencing racism, racial bias, profiling and prejudice. I've sadly never known a reality where my collective sisters or brothers of color weren't a "target." My heart aches for every victim, their partners, children, families, friends and communities.

This morning I sat with a dear friend and shared with her my concern, angst, sorrow and grief at the state of the world. All she did was sit with me and radiate her own light. In her calm, loving, light-filled and attentive presence, I felt myself inch closer to a lighter state of mind and heart. I don't believe in dishonoring the moments we feel "darker" emotions but when we are headed in the downward direction of despair, it helps to have a ray of light that lifts our gaze and draws our attention to what is alive within and around us. This practice is what reinforces the presence of hope. And since I believe in living and embodying archetypal energies, I couldn't help but equate this interaction with the archetype of the sun.

When the sun emerges, we can see what's in front of and around us with greater clarity. It's no wonder that they call the sun the greater illuminator. With the sun, we feel the heat and warmth of aliveness. It's no wonder that things cool, wither and die without the warmth of sun. This morning, my friend was my sunshine. She helped me see with greater clarity, she helped me tune in to what's living inside of me instead of focusing on despair and subsequently I felt lighter and brighter. While I still feel the shadow of grief, I am fiercely determined to sustain my gaze and attention on the light and do everything I can to be of service by sharing my own light.

Thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter. Below are some announcements for the days ahead. May we all be light sources for each other <3.
