Happy New Year! It's been wonderful seeing so many of you return to classes this week. I hold tenderly the news you've shared of losing loved ones over the holidays, of unexpected upcoming changes to your lives, and holding uncertainty around everything from relationships to livelihood. We hold it all, in Nia and ArcanaDance, there's a space to put your emotion-in-motion, to feel and release deeply and to look around you and see people who regard you with acceptance and encouragement.
For those of you that came to the New Year Intention Setting classes, thank you! I am still inspired by the heartfelt intentions you shared. It was truly special to witness you dancing your intentions and sealing them into your brain, muscles, bones and cells. I have full faith that your intentions have wings and will manifest in your lives.
I am calling 2017 the year of the visionary. In numerology 2017 is a "1" universal year. In the tarot, card 1 is The Magician, the archetype of the visionary. This is a fantastic year for beginnings, inspiration, initiative, leadership and independence. The emphasis is on something new - new realities, new paradigms, new perspectives, new models of work, new structures, etc. And while it's true that a new year is always a great time for beginnings, this numerological influence gives us an extra boost from the ethers to create a new vision for ourselves, our families, our communities, our country, and our planet.
Over the next two months I will be holding a series of classes and workshops on the Magician
. My intention is to use this collective oomph from the Universe to support you in bringing one of your visions into form. This past week I had a fascinating conversation with a colleague. She said she was skeptical of magical thinking and is convinced that some people are in survival mode and don't have "time" to entertain being a visionary. She was speaking my language. I come from a lineage of struggle and an orientation of lack and scarcity. I am a woman, a woman of color, from a family of immigrants, I am the only person in my family with a college degree (but my momma is a lot smarter than me!), I grew up in poverty, and I didn't even know privilege was a thing until I felt the harshness of it in college and my first jobs. Resourcefulness and survival are woven into the fabric of my being. With that as my bedrock, I never gave myself permission to dream big. Any big dreams I had were almost instantly shrunk as I rattled off a thousand reasons why the vision couldn't manifest. Oh and don't get me started on how well I could dole out the facts and evidence of how everything was working against me.
As I've grown wiser, and continue to do so, I've learned so much from working with the visionary archetype. The Magician has taught me that I can take any vision, goal or desire and allow myself to explore it from an orientation of unlimited potential and possibility as opposed to the familiar place of self-imposed boundaries and perceived restrictions. It's the difference between looking out a window the size of the palm of your hand to see the stars versus standing outside and having an unobstructed view. Starting your vision from a place of expansiveness (options! options! options!
) ensures its potency. You can always apply the "reality check" of restriction later...after you've dreamt that biggest vision possible for yourself. The Magician invites us to cast a wide net, of possibility, and with that wide net we can identify the raw materials we have to work with to make our vision a reality. I am doing what I love now because I said yes to the Magician, to having a bold vision and being ok with that vision succeeding or failing. The point is to use the raw material of your mind, heart, body and spirit to inspire and if you dare, create a new reality. What new reality do you want to create in 2017?
"It takes discernment, wisdom, skill and yes, daily practice, and the support of loving communities, to manage our inner kingdoms effectively, to establish and hold clear energetic boundaries in the face of powerful forces that would tear down our sovereignties and freedoms.
The challenge remains what it always has been – to act with presence, power and skillful purpose while holding inner ground of equilibrium, humour and holiness." - Hiro Boga

On Monday, January 16, 2017
(MLK Day), I am holding a special two-hour by donation ArcanaDance workshop
, from 12:00pm - 2:00pm
at Embrace the Moon
in Ballard, for people interested in exploring sacred activism through the lens of the Justice tarot card. Justice is dear to my heart. I believe that we all have the capacity to be loving and powerful activists and catalysts for change for causes we hold dear.
I do not believe there's one approach to activism that works for everyone. Each of us is unique. For me, my activism is reflected in the work I do - to strive to always create a safe and supportive space, without judgment, for people to move together, feel together and begin to heal together. I desire to do my part, however small, in helping people embrace the possibilities of doing sacred activist work their own way, a way that honors their uniqueness.
Please join me on January 16th and feel free to invite others. All are welcome.
I am looking forward to dancing with you in the year ahead <3.
With love, warmth and gratitude,
