“So if your world gets heavy and your fire burns low
Your road gets rough and your heart runs cold, just
Let it breathe like the wind through the trees
Let it flow with ease like an ocean breeze
Take it all in
Let it all out”
- Let it Breathe
“The holiest freedom
is our choice
to deeply listen
to the inner voice”
- Vessel
“Just be as you are, just do as you do
By grace and devotion
By lettin go, lettin go overything
By breath as it takes you”
- Stars
“Be gentle to yourself…
Be the place where your heart is lifted up
Look inside and give it all you got
Lift yourself higher”
- Be Gentle
"There is a part of me
That knows that I'll be just fine
Just fine”
- Just Fine
"O-o-h Child
“Ooh child
Things are gonna be easier
Ooh child
Things'll be brighter”
- O-o-h Child
“When you're high on emotion
And you're losing your focus
And you feel too exhausted to pray
Don't get lost in the moment
Or give up when you're closest
All you need is somebody to say
It's okay not to be okay”
- It’s OK not to be OK
"Oh, I been so down and under pressure
I'm way too fine to be this stressed, yeah
Oh, I'm not the girl I was or used to be, uh
Bitch, I might be better
Turn up the music, turn down the lights
I got a feelin' I'm gon' be alright
Okay (Okay), alright
It's about damn time (Time)
Turn up the music, let's celebrate (Alright)
I got a feelin' I'm gon' be okay
Okay (Okay), alright
It's about damn time"
- It’s About Damn Time
“She's got the power
To change the rules”
- Put a Woman in Charge
“Let go and you’ll feel more alive…
Let your spirit fly just like a bird”
- Congoleo (Let Go)
“Every day I find
It's peace and joy of mind
And it keeps me, keeps me singing in my soul”
- Singing In My Soul
“And when the wind blows
Shaking our foundation to the core
We'll bend and not break
and when we break we'll understand what friends are for
and when you reach out, you're giving me a chance to love you more
and when I reach out, I'm giving you a chance to love me more
Love is Contagious”
- Love Is
“On and on
We wait for it
We heal our wounds
And move forward
All we want is love
It breathes for as
It feeds us
Even though
We don't even know it
All we want is love”
- All We Want Is Love
(Many thanks to Alba Wejebe for this song)
"I've decided to be kinder
To myself when I feel sad
I've decided to be grateful
For all I ever had
I know
I am blessed"
- Kinder
"You beautiful feeling being
Full of heart and soul
Carrying grief and joy
Sometimes in the same breath
...This year has not been the most gentle or kind
But it has hushed the doing...
Calling you to heal and feel everything.
Do not hold back
Do not suppress
Shed every tear
Carry all the joy you can grasp in your palms"

When I wrote my newsletter last week I mentioned that we were waiting for Tropical Storm (Hurricane Ian) to pass through. The rain and winds arrived on Friday and knocked out our power for 21 hours. We were safe and had everything we needed. I spent a lot of time looking out the window marveling at the strength and resilience of the trees dancing with sometimes 55-65 MPH wind gusts. I watched as branches broke off and leaves swirled through the air. When the storm passed, stillness set in and it was beautiful. There was debris everywhere but there was more left standing than had been driven to the ground. That was a powerful awareness - to feel myself focusing on what remains. If you know tarot, it was an embodiment of the 5 of Cups and in some respects, the Star.
I think the power of the 5 of Cups comes from honoring all of the feelings that are present in moments of loss. The feeling of loss can feel huge and often overshadows or causes us to overlook what still remains. But there is room for both the awareness and feeling of loss and the recognition of what, in our life, is still in tact. This past year, there were moments when I had difficulty removing my mental and somatic blinders and seeing/feeling beyond loss or the fear of loss. I was amazed when those blinders lifted on their own - after the storm. I don't know what caused the shift and it doesn't matter - I am just so grateful that it happened! I suspect that consciously and intentionally dancing with the Winds of Change (Danza del Viento) and the Tower/Star (emphasizing the renewed sense of purpose, direction, hope, healing and faith that arises from the rubble) over the past two months prepared my body for what my mind couldn't access on its own. This is yet another reason why I absolutely love these archetypal dances. They marinate in the field of the body and create ripples of healing and change in our consciousness and lived experience.
In about 4 hours I will celebrate my 47th birthday. I have a cold and it's not going to stop me from celebrating - gently :). During the next few days I will do my annual rituals of reflecting on the year that has passed, listing the experiences and learnings I am grateful for, honoring and respecting the experiences that challenged and weighed me down, celebrating every feeling that this kind of self-reflection can excavate, and then getting curious about how I may want to grow more deeply in this incarnation in the year ahead. In the meantime, I have invited the theme of Play into my life this month. I had a blast playing with the wind with my dancing shawl during Sunday's class and embodying the Fool and the Page of Swords/Child of Air during our Cultivating the Spirit of Play Embodied Movement Explorations class on Wednesday. I was definitely able to access some of the levity that I have been craving.
Between the awareness of focusing on what remains and finally accessing the levity I have been craving, I decided to create a special playlist for this Sunday's class - to celebrate my birthday in community. I selected songs from the past year (many of which I have taught this year) that helped me through...that offered me strength and perspective, steadied my heart, brought me joy, and are a reflection of the deep somatic healing work I have been going through. I think these are my 5 of Cups and Tower/Star songs - the ones that honor both the heaviness and hope as well as the losses and what remains. At the top of this newsletter I have shared excerpts of each song with links to the songs on YouTube. I hope that these songs are a balm for your spirit or ignite a sense of hope (or Play) inside of you. I am so excited to dance with you! I will officially be a year older in chronological age and ever youthful and playful in heart and soul ;)
If you feel called to it, please keep my beloved Aunt Liz in your thoughts and prayers. Many of you know that she's been undergoing treatment for a bladder cancer recurrence. It's been an excruciating two years for her and she is having major surgery tomorrow. I have already asked the Universe for my birthday present - that the surgery go well and that she heal gently, swiftly and with loving support all around her.
Classes in the week ahead - Sunday at 10:00AM PDT and Wednesday at 9AM PDT
Deeply grateful for this community,
Jennifer
Schedule Going Forward:
- Somos Luceros on Sundays at 10AM PDT
- Embodied Movement Explorations in Body Wisdom & Wellness on Wednesdays at 9AM PDT
- ArcanaDance - next workshop TBA
Somos Luceros
Somos Luceros is a somatic dance practice designed to illuminate the wisdom of your body and cultivate deep embodiment of archetypal qualities that offer lightness, depth and joy. The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling, opening new chapters in our bodies where we can see and feel our most luminous potential. Release the stories in your body that weigh you down and reclaim your light. In Spanish, Somos means “we are” and Luceros means “bringers of light” or “bright stars.” This name honors my father, my paternal indigenous ancestors in South America, my heritage, and our collective oldest ancestor, the stars. We are dancing bodies of light.
With immense gratitude for your continued support,
Jennifer

Join us for Embodied Movement Explorations for Body Wisdom and Wellness
Body wisdom is being aware of and attuned to what our body needs to feel well. This somatic intelligence and tending can be accessed and cultivated in many ways.
Every week we will explore a variety of somatic movement practices that include somatic dance, yoga, QiGong, archetypal expression (mainly tarot), and other modalities that emphasize mindfulness and that guide self-knowing.
Classes for the month of October will focus on Cultivating the Spirit of Play.
Our guiding tarot cards for this October series of classes are the Fool and the four Pages (court/people cards).
In the tarot, the Fool is the archetype of the seeker and teaches us the art of wonder, exploration, and play.
The four Pages (Air/Swords, Earth/Pentacles, Water/Cups, and Fire/Wands) are the learners, seekers, and students of their suit/element.
Join us as we explore bringing the spirit of wonder, exploration and play into each elemental expression - air, earth, water and fire - through dance!
Note: Classes will be held on Wednesdays, October 5, 12, and 19, 2022. No class on October 26.
In this class we center the experience of living, feeling, sensing and moving in our bodies. We learn practices to know ourselves more deeply, cultivate joy, restore from stress, explore creative self-expression, and ways to nourish the various systems (fluid, muscular, skeletal, organ, nervous, and cellular) of our body.
Come to move your body, develop a deeper appreciation for the intelligence and wisdom of your body, and to learn practices to be well in mind, body, heart and soul.
Wear comfortable clothes to move in. No shoes required. Feel free to have a yoga mat, blanket or towel for floor-based practices.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the class/meeting.

Dance with Janice on Saturdays!

For those of you interested in a Saturday 10AM PDT Zoom class, I highly recommend Janice Steinberg's Nia classes! She is one of our beloved Somos Luceros community members and I dance with her whenever I can. I love her classes and know you will too.
This Saturday, October 8 at 10AM PDT, Janice is teaching my routine (squeals), Dance of Rhythmic Freedom & Flow, in honor of my birthday. I wish I could be there! I am so excited and absolutely love collaborating with Janice - I know she will make this routine her own and it will be glorious!
To join Janice's Saturday Nia classes (10AM PDT), email her to get on her mailing list. She sends the Zoom link for class via email on the day of class. And like my classes, Janice's classes are donation-based as well.

Mary Lenox's Poetry

Following is the poem, Breath of Love, that Mary wrote and shared with us after class this past Sunday, October 2. This poem, as always, added a deeper layer of resonance with our dance and it's also informed me this week as I lean into the love that is the 5 of Cups. Thank you, Mary!
Live in the breath of love
Do it in a mindful way
In homage to your creator
Live in the breath of love
Trust the flow of wisdom
To inspire, inform, guide
Live in the breath of love
Like the light of the sun
Banishing darkness
Live in the breath of love
Like the rhythmic currents of the mighty Mississippi
Answering gravity’s call
Live in the breath of love
Awakening your spirit
This very moment
Live in the breath of love
Freely given to one and all
Breath by breath
Live in the breath of love
Be grateful for that divine gift from God
Keeping all life ALIVE from the dawning of creation
