The Quality of Connection
View this email in your browser
"In solitude, they learn that quiet offers an opportunity to either pick one’s poison or to learn one’s medicine. The Hermit encourages us to turn towards the latter...

The archetype of The Hermit reminds us that the difference between loneliness and solitude lies in the quality of connection that you choose to cultivate with yourself when no one is looking, even if it means being misunderstood by the world at large.

...when The Hermit card appears, it’s an invitation to remove yourself from the noise of the public world to retreat into your private world where you can take a breath to reflect, analyze, listen, and, also, heal and recover.

...The Hermit, carrying the numerological energy of the number 9 as well as the Mercurial energy of Virgo, asks us to sit within the privacy of our inner garden to take inventory of every earthworm, beetle, and crow that contributes to its ecological health as well as the gum wrappers, roaches, and chippy bags that need to be collected and disposed of.

...What have you gathered over the last little while? What needs to be reviewed and integrated at this time? What kernels of wisdom float to the surface as you examine the story that your habits reveal? Place your palms on the fault lines etched into your everyday experience and sense the change that’s coming your way. Is your foundation solid enough to survive another earthquake, or is it time to retrofit your shit?"

— Sarah Gill, Tarot for the End of Times Podcast episode on The Hermit

September 30, 2021

Greetings on this last day of September. Tomorrow is October 1st and even though I am not feeling particularly celebratory, I launch the 31 days of birthday, honoring my birth month. My dear friend Gina initiated the "week of birthday" many years ago. I was so inspired (and amused) by her idea that over the years I expanded it into the 7 days then 14 days then 21 days until it became the 31 days of birthday. It's not 31 days of partying or of opening gifts. These 31 days are devoted to focusing my attention on the pearls of my life (so far), to celebrate another year of becoming wiser (always questionable), and to set some intentions for my next spin around the sun. And yes, I absolutely make it a point to eat one sweet thing everyday - a truffle, a piece of fruit, a cookie, a square (or more) of chocolate, etc. As I have been "hanging out" with the Hermit the past few weeks, I want to bring a consciousness to the quality of the connection I choose to cultivate with my self during this month of birthday. I'd like it to feel more like medicine, especially to nurse the swells of grief I've been feeling.

Y'all, abuela is still with us. She is a marvel. And this process of letting go is not easy. She is ready to transition and her body, solid with 103+ years of strength and survival, is not ready to let go. Over the past week, her "consciousness" has drifted further - she doesn't acknowledge or recognize anyone. She sleeps nearly all day and barely eats. It's so good to know she is resting and not in any pain at all. And, speaking for myself and not my entire family, I did not realize how painful it would be to watch her light dim and almost certainly blow out. Her presence, even at 4'7, has always been larger than life. Abuela has always taken up space, without apology or permission. Our family, including abuela, has always spoken openly and candidly about death. We've all agreed to let each other go and to respect our soul's journeys. I am not wrestling with letting her go, I am just recognizing the immensity of the gaping hole that will be left in our lives. I'd like to fill that space, intentionally, with the medicine of my memories of her - the good ones. I'd like to add a healing balm some looming feelings of regret that I have...especially for the times when the quality of connection I chose to have with her was distant, distracted, defensive, and sassy. I can hold this with compassion and also acknowledge that feeling the regret is helping me access some important wisdom around how to be in relationship differently. If I don't make the space to feel, the wisdom can't be known.

Back to quality of connection. I have been immersed in Hermit-land the past week. Yes, I found a local labyrinth and walked it (yay). While I was in my contemplative walk, a woman stood at the entrance, waiting patiently for me to complete my pilgrimage. She ended up capturing a photo of my meditation and I am grateful to her for doing so. The photo is to the right. After my walk, I sat on a bench and listened to the podcast episode which I excerpted above. You can listen to the entire 21-minute episode here. While listening, I realized that I'd like to focus on the Hermit as a relational process, not a product (wisdom). Yes, the process results in wisdom but the quality of the connection made to ourselves as we turn inward and explore our inner terrain of lived experiences is an epic journey. Wisdom comes in its own time. Removing ourselves from the noise of the world is a way to deepen and refine our connection to ourselves; to the garden of narratives that live within and ultimately become the patterns and habits we embody (consciously or unconsciously). What if the quality of that connection was to learn our own medicine? And what if that medicine transforms our ecological health and well-being? What if we discover that the process itself is the medicine?

And of course, as I mentioned last week, I am on call for my family and do not know when I will need to depart for New York, so please be sure to register for class so that I can contact you in the event of a class cancelation.

Deeply grateful for this community,
Jennifer

Somos Luceros

Somos Luceros is a somatic dance practice designed to illuminate the wisdom of your body and cultivate deep embodiment of archetypal qualities that offer lightness, depth and joy. The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling, opening new chapters in our bodies where we can see and feel our most luminous potential. Release the stories in your body that weigh you down and reclaim your light. In Spanish, Somos means “we are” and Luceros means “bringers of light” or “bright stars.” This name honors my father, my paternal indigenous ancestors in South America, my heritage, and our collective oldest ancestor, the stars. We are dancing bodies of light.

With immense gratitude for your continued support,
Jennifer

Join us for the Dance of The Hermit: Exploring the Wise One Within with Tarot & Movement

During this ArcanaDance™ workshop we will explore, through tarot and movement, how to alchemize the wisdom of our life lessons into pearls of spiritual growth and personal development.

In the tarot, the Hermit card is the archetype of the inner sage; the wise one within.

When we explore this archetype, we tap into the well of experiences and reflections deep inside of us that have given shape to the lantern of our wisdom.

The Hermit archetype teaches us the art of self-discovery, the kind of inner pilgrimage that builds our confidence in our self-knowing rather than seeking knowing in others.

In this workshop you will:

  • Experience a movement exploration of the qualities of the Hermit
  • Play with and learn from tarot
  • Discover how to deepen your confidence in your inner sage

No tarot or dance experience is required.

ArcanaDance™ is a fusion of tarot and movement that feels like dance therapy! Using imagery, music and guided movement prompts, ArcanaDance™ makes personal growth fun, empowering, multidimensional and transformative

Join us for Dancing Lanterns of Wisdom: An Embodied Exploration of Listening and Revealing What Has Heart & Meaning

In this dance we weave together several Somos Luceros bodies of work, to invoke an exploration of what it means to listen deeply and uncover what has heart and meaning for us.

In the tarot, the Hermit is the archetype of the wise-one within and teaches us the art of self-reflection, self-discovery and self-knowing. These processes draw us inward where we sift through our narratives and are able to reveal the gems, those things with heart and meaning, that become the lanterns that represent our understanding, maturation, healing, and wisdom.

Dancing Lanterns of Wisdom is template to explore connecting head and heart, walking with our lanterns, expanding our lens of perception, listening deeply, sifting and uplifting, and both embracing and sharing the wisdom revealed.

The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling. You are invited to receive the choreography, bring it into your body and make it your own.

Coming Home to Ourselves Dance-Yoga Practice is a somatic dance yoga practice that brings together movement as metaphor and the expanse of yoga with the intent to guide us to deeper embodiment beyond the yoga mat. This practice is about befriending your body and reuniting with it as a sacred beloved and noticing how your mind and body work together to create harmony in your life.

I am so delighted that we will gather to move our bodies, breath, imaginations, and heart to plant seeds of balance and harmony on this new moon in Libra (October 6).

Libra is a sign associated with balance, harmony, fairness and is the cultivator and champion of relationship. We are both in relationship with ourselves and with others. Sometimes being in relationship can disrupt our sense of inner (and outer) balance.

In this class, we will play with “tipping the scales” so that we discover harmonious balance within ourselves, especially in relationship with our moving bodies. Let’s play!

This class includes simple yoga postures in dance form (alternating fluid movement and stillness), mindfulness prompts, various meditation practices, the application of mantra, mudras, and the weaving in of the rich and deep yoga philosophy that guides us into deeper levels of self-knowing and unity of mind and body.

Class is 75 minutes. Wear comfortable clothes to move in. Make sure you have a yoga mat or towel. Feel free to also have a blanket or pillow to sit on for the seated portion of class.

If you are new to the language I have used above to describe class, here are some simple guiding definitions:
  • What is Movement? For this class it is body postures in motion. We will take simple yoga asanas (poses) and embody them through a dance that blends fluidity and stillness.
  • What is Mindfulness? A quality of focused awareness to the present moment and of our sensations that includes our body, mind, and emotions.
  • What is Meditation? Various experiential practices and techniques that support mindfulness and focusing our mind and body.
  • What is Mantra? A sound, word or group of words (such as affirmations) that aid in mindfulness, meditation and focusing the mind and body.
  • What is Mudra? Hand and body gestures that both ground and move energy in the body.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the class/meeting.

Here is the info to make a payment of your choice, in exchange for the class experience: I am YTT 300 certified in the Honor Yoga's Roots cohort via Ignite Yoga and Wellness Institute.

Mary Lenox's Poetry

Following is the poem Mary shared with us after class last Sunday September 26. This poem so beautifully captures the inquiry of the quality of connection and of applying the wise inquiring lens of the Hermit to our lives.

In Her Garden of Life

She walked into her garden
Carefully cultivating her creation
Fraught with uncertainty, surprise, and constant change

She attended to her garden
With mindful rituals of watering, weeding, fertilizing
In faith, her efforts would yield a harvest of beauty, abundance, love

Hope reigns in the garden of life
As body, mind, spirit, emotions are blessed
From the wellspring of divine creation

I wonder

In my garden
Am I cultivating patience, forbearance, gratitude?
By my daily thoughts and actions

Am I weeding out anxiety, fear, resentment, jealousy
To allow space for love to grow?
Day by day

Am I watering my garden?
From the source
Of peace, wisdom, generosity

Am I being my authentic self?
As my gift of love to the world

I wonder
