“I believe that each of us carries a bit of inner brightness, something entirely unique and individual. A flame that's worth protecting. When we are able to recognize our own light, we become empowered to use it. When we learn to foster what's unique in the people around us, we become better able to build compassionate communities and make meaningful change."
- Michelle Obama, The Light We Carry

This Sunday, we celebrate the Chinese New Year and the beginning of the Year of the Rabbit. It's my year! I was born in the year of the rabbit (sometimes referred to as the year of the cat) and I have been looking forward to the arrival of this year. When I look back, I reflect on some wonderful things that happened for me in previous rabbit years.
First, I was born and got to embrace the wonders of this incarnation! Hooray! The next time rabbit rolled around I entered Junior High School and made connections that forever changed life - best friends, joining the chorus and learning to use my voice, becoming an activist, meeting my first mentor, and my first boyfriend. Then, when rabbit year came around again, I began teaching Nia, forging connections to a community of colleagues and students, and awakening to the joys of teaching embodied movement.
This, 2023, is my next cycle with rabbit. I feel good. I feel purposeful. I am aware of my own Becoming and am getting clearer on how I want to Be, what I want to Build in the years ahead. As I went through all of the routines I've taught in the past few years the one that captures my hopes and dreams for this Rabbit year the Dance of Becoming: An Embodied Exploration of Being Bold, Brave, Beautiful, and Balanced (to the music of Wiyaala and Angelique Kidjo).
I am eager to hop hoppity hop into a year defined by Boldness, Bravery, Beauty, Balance and to add from the quote above...Brightness, Belief, and Building. It's a Big-A$$ B year! A tall order and I am ready for it. Bring it on! Through the dance, particularly with intentionality, I am gathering, nurturing and cultivating these qualities.. further expanding the Brightness of my spirit, Believing in my sacred work, and Building a legacy that I will be proud of and that will Bring meaningful change to others.
Let's celebrate the Year of the Rabbit together! Who are my other rabbit's? :)

Somos Luceros
Somos Luceros is a somatic dance practice designed to illuminate the wisdom of your body and cultivate deep embodiment of archetypal qualities that offer lightness, depth and joy. The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling, opening new chapters in our bodies where we can see and feel our most luminous potential. Release the stories in your body that weigh you down and reclaim your light. In Spanish, Somos means “we are” and Luceros means “bringers of light” or “bright stars.” This name honors my father, my paternal indigenous ancestors in South America, my heritage, and our collective oldest ancestor, the stars. We are dancing bodies of light.
With immense gratitude for your continued support,
Jennifer

Join us for the Dance of Becoming: An Embodied Exploration of Being Bold, Brave, Beautiful, and Balanced
This class brings together the music of Wiyaala and Angelique Kidjo from two bodies of work I have shared before: Lioness (co-created with Janice Steinberg) and the Dance of Feminine Empowerment.
Both female artists are known for their bold creativity, bravery (especially around social and political issues), and for their beauty. I have added balance as the physical focus of the focus.
The guiding question we will embody in this dance is: how am I becoming more bold, brave, beautiful and balanced in my life? And, how can I expand the Brightness of my spirit, Believe in my sacred work, and Build a legacy that I will be proud of and that will Bring meaningful change to others?
The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling. You are invited to receive the choreography, bring it into your body and make it your own.

Body wisdom is being aware of and attuned to what our body needs to feel well. This somatic intelligence and tending can be accessed and cultivated in many ways.
Every week we will explore a variety of somatic movement practices that include somatic dance, yoga, QiGong, archetypal expression (mainly tarot), and other modalities that emphasize mindfulness and that guide self-knowing.
Classes for the month January will focus on Moving into Clarity.
Our guiding tarot card for this class is the Six of Swords/Air and our Embodied Movement Exploration cards are Close, Expand, Search, and Shake.
The invitation is to explore what it means to move from ambiguity or choppy waters to clarity and peaceful waters.
What aids us? What guides us? What do we need to put closure to? What helps us expand our perception to see possibilities for a smoother path ahead? How do we search for clarity? And how do we shake ourselves off and step onto solid ground?

In this class we center the experience of living, feeling, sensing and moving in our bodies. We learn practices to know ourselves more deeply, cultivate joy, restore from stress, explore creative self-expression, and ways to nourish the various systems (fluid, muscular, skeletal, organ, nervous, and cellular) of our body.
Come to move your body, develop a deeper appreciation for the intelligence and wisdom of your body, and to learn practices to be well in mind, body, heart and soul.
Wear comfortable clothes to move in. No shoes required. Feel free to have a yoga mat, blanket or towel for floor-based practices.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the class/meeting.

Mary Lenox's Poetry

Following is the poem, Nature's Model of Hope, that Mary wrote and shared with us after class this past Sunday.
This poem was deeply moving and inspirational after our class in honor and celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and The King Center’s theme of ‘It Starts with Me: Cultivating a Beloved Community Mindset to Transform Unjust Systems.
Nature's Model of Hope
Nature is the master teacher of hope
Look at the hummingbird’s nest
Hidden among the greens
With two blue eggs holding life for the next generation
But wait
Storms, rains, winds, predators, heat, cold
Constant threats to survival
Mother hummingbird protects the nestling’s home with her tiny body
In the hope for chicks to emerge from the eggs
Hatchlings' mouths wide open, waiting for constant feeding
She seeks and hopefully finds food for them
Each day a new challenge from dawn to dusk
One day, mom leaves
The chicks are on their own
Each finding a way
Into the mystery of uncertainty
Isn’t that hope?
Entering into the unknown
On the wings of faith
Awake to the miracle
We are never alone
With the gift of divine love
Holding us
In a cocoon of grace
