“The star appears after darkness,
after a period of difficulty, disconnection,
in the dusty ruin and debris of the tower.
the star bring assurance and comfort, light in a
moonless sky, the promise that
it will be okay.
stars were navigation tools in the old world -
here, the star beams confidence and trust in your inner
map,
a drawing back to yourself after feeling lost,
a return to trust and optimism.
the flow of abundance is not material:
the star speaks of depth in the inner world.
a bright peace, knowingness, feeling renewed enough
to begin thinking about
generosity.
may you pour freely from a full cup, may you know your
direction within.”

As I was preparing for class last Sunday (September 11), I stumbled across a beautiful dance ceremony on YouTube - the Table of Silence Project 9/11. More below about it. Scroll down :)
As I watched the ritual, I felt like each dancer was a light-line (vs lifeline) to one of the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on 9/11 - keeping their memory alive. One of my closest childhood friends lost her life in Tower One of the World Trade Center and I know countless other loved ones, including my husband, who experienced PTSD, long-term health impacts, hate crimes, and unspeakable grief.
In our class on Sunday we explored moving as stardust “light lines.” We sourced and strengthened our inner light and then expanded and reached those lines of light outward for others to see and feel. For me, I felt myself calling on the light lines of ancestors and loves ones - to be a source of light and hope in difficult times. And I also knew that extending my own light may offer a north star for someone else in the future. It was beautiful to image all of our interconnected light lines traveling across space and time.
A few people asked if we could do the dance again this Sunday and yes, we will! And this Sunday we are adding another layer and dimension to the dance. When I first taught the dance two Sundays ago I mentioned that, in the journey of the tarot, the Star follows the Tower. The Tower is the unexpected breakdowns (or breakthroughs) that can make us feel like our world is falling apart, everything familiar crumbling, and like we have no ground to stand on.

Out of the rubble and ash emerges the Star, a symbol of hope, renewal and restoration - a remembrance that we are held by something greater and are connected to an invisible source that is holding us together in a much wider fabric. It’s the card that reminds us that we are born of stars and all that stuff in the rubble of life is also star material that can be rebuilt. In fact, it’s the promise of “we will rebuild.” In that what has been lost becomes the ground for finding ourselves anew.
This Sunday, we will weave together the story of the Tower and Star, emphasizing the renewed sense of purpose, direction, hope, healing and faith that arises from the rubble.
More about the Table of Silence Project 9/1:
Livestreamed from Lincoln Center, in partnership with Buglisi Dance Theatre, the Table of Silence Project 9/11 is an annual free public performance ritual for peace conceived and choreographed in 2011 by Jacqulyn Buglisi, Artistic Director of Buglisi Dance Theatre.
"Moving to the plaintive strains of the flute, the heartbeat of bass drums, trumpet, bells and the cries of a chorus, the dancers form patterns of concentric circles around the iconic Revson Fountain to create an ancient Peace Labyrinth while repeating 12 symbolic ritualistic gestures. This sacred landscape becomes filled with the transcendent energy of the Mandala for healing, peace and harmony."
The ritual performance begins at minute 10:30 and is absolutely breathtaking:

Somos Luceros
Somos Luceros is a somatic dance practice designed to illuminate the wisdom of your body and cultivate deep embodiment of archetypal qualities that offer lightness, depth and joy. The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling, opening new chapters in our bodies where we can see and feel our most luminous potential. Release the stories in your body that weigh you down and reclaim your light. In Spanish, Somos means “we are” and Luceros means “bringers of light” or “bright stars.” This name honors my father, my paternal indigenous ancestors in South America, my heritage, and our collective oldest ancestor, the stars. We are dancing bodies of light.
With immense gratitude for your continued support,
Jennifer

In the tarot, the Star card represents the symbolic archetype of the guiding light. Light is a source of hope, faith and divine guidance.

Body wisdom is being aware of and attuned to what our body needs to feel well. This somatic intelligence and tending can be accessed and cultivated in many ways.
Every week we will explore a variety of somatic movement practices that include somatic dance, yoga, QiGong, archetypal expression (mainly tarot), and other modalities that emphasize mindfulness and that guide self-knowing.
Classes for the month of September will focus on Listening to our Inner Wise Self.
It’s Virgo season, and soon the seasons will shift from summer to fall. We begin to turn our attention inward and to reflect on where in our lives we need rest, pruning, cultivation, attuning, and care.
Our guiding tarot card for this class is the Hermit. In the tarot, the Hermit is the archetype of the wise-one within and teaches us the art of self-reflection, self-discovery and self-knowing. The Hermit is the ultimate template for the art of embodied listening. As a guide, it can reveal to us deeper understanding and can illuminate the things, qualities, people, and experiences in our lives that have heart and meaning.
For the entire month we will be exploring the Somos Luceros body of work, Dancing Lanterns of Wisdom: An Embodied Exploration of Listening and Revealing What Has Heart & Meaning. This dance is a template to explore connecting head and heart, walking with our lanterns, expanding our lens of perception, listening deeply, sifting and uplifting, and both embracing and sharing the wisdom revealed.

In this class we center the experience of living, feeling, sensing and moving in our bodies. We learn practices to know ourselves more deeply, cultivate joy, restore from stress, explore creative self-expression, and ways to nourish the various systems (fluid, muscular, skeletal, organ, nervous, and cellular) of our body.
Come to move your body, develop a deeper appreciation for the intelligence and wisdom of your body, and to learn practices to be well in mind, body, heart and soul.
Wear comfortable clothes to move in. No shoes required. Feel free to have a yoga mat, blanket or towel for floor-based practices.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the class/meeting.

Mary Lenox's Poetry

Following is the poem, Look for the Light, that Mary wrote and shared with us after class this past Sunday, September 11. It was the perfect poem to accompany our "light lines" dance!
Look for the Light
Strolling along the way
A voice within spoke to my spirit, saying
Look for the light
When you don’t see your way clear
And darkness seems to ambush your mind
Look for the light of clarity
When impatience holds sway
Banish fear right away
Look for the light of courage
When life surprises you
With dissonance of this and that
Look for the light of peace
When you can’t see your way
In desperate despair
Look for the light of hope
When you feel friendless
Embrace self-love
Look for the light of self-compassion
When disappointment rains on your parade
Sing a song of gratitude
Look for the light of joy
When nothing else will do
Look for the light of divine love
Always, always with you

Meet Charlotte's "artivist" Rosalía Torres-Weiner
This is an old segment from PBC NC but I didn't live her in 2018 when it first aired and it was just re-shown earlier this week. What an absolutely wonderful idea - a food truck converted into an art mobile!
"Art is powerful. That's the belief of self-proclaimed "artivist" Rosalía Torres-Weiner, who is combining her art with her activism. She's representing stories of the Latino community in her home of Charlotte, North Carolina, with colors, shapes and vibrant people in her paintings and murals. While she's made art that decorates the city of Charlotte, and the Smithsonian, she's also bringing the expressive tool of art-making to others, with her innovative art truck."
