"She,
In the dark,
Found light
Brighter than many ever see.

She,
Within herself,
Found loveliness,
Through the soul’s own mastery.

And now the world receives
From her dower:
The message of the strength
Of inner power."

— Helen Keller by Langston Hughes

August 12, 2021

This week I have been sorting through all of my files on the archetype of Strength. The last time I shared an ArcanaDance series with this archetype was in May 2016 in Seattle. There is about six hours worth of material to focus into our two-hour workshop this Saturday. There are many angles to enter this archetype just as there are many entry points to access courage, bravery and resilience. I am sitting with two aspects of strength that are relevant and present for me right now - the first is the truth that this archetype is about how we individually endure challenge and hardship in service to our survival in life. The second is the recognition that we are in a collective moment of enduring the challenges that face us as a society (the ever-evolving pandemic, climate crisis, political instability, injustice, etc.) and that we must be strong for each other - for the survival of humanity, all sentient beings and our planet. I was then reminded that the Star (our archetype for hope, faith and healing) sits underneath Strength as both an anchor and as wellspring that we can draw from when we need to remember that courage has been passed down to us by our human, plant, animal, and organismic ancestors. Survival is all around us. We are here because of survival. How we approach survival, how we channel courage, how we display bravery, and how we wield our power and strength is up to us.  We can do it recklessly or responsibly.

We are always negotiating power. How much of it we have. How much of it to use and wield. How much others have and how much they can wield over us. Power is a partnership. It's a dance. There's a part of me that loves and appreciates when people proclaim, "take back your power" or "own your power." And then there's another part of me that wants to call bullshit. I can know my power. I can own my power. I can know how to use my power. But that doesn't mean I have power over every person or situation I find myself in. There are always forces ready to undermine, oppress and squash our power. And sometimes they will win and we will succumb. Sometimes being brave is fighting. Sometimes it's speaking up. Sometimes it's silence. Sometime it is hiding. Other times it's being seen. Sometimes it's surrender. Sometimes it's muscling through. Sometimes it's pacifying and softening.  But courage is always about enduring. I do not personally think that our power is diminished when we negotiate it in service to our survival. The light we have within, the one planted by the star (all that came before us), burns brightly and can be our inner beacon of strength. We have to remember that it is there and to not snuff it out in the process of negotiation.

I did not know how much I would need this archetype right now - I have been exploring all of the entry points and ways to express strength, courage, and bravery. Honoring that they don't have to look or feel like anyone else's definition of these words. If you google any of these words (strength, courage, brave) you will see images of solitary figures - some wearing a cape, others having climbed to the top of a mountain, others jumping between cliffs, hard bodies with muscles, fists up in the air, hands on hips, etc. I ended up laughing because none of those images matched my own experience of these words. I am the only who gets to define what strength, courage and bravery are for me and I can only do that by being in touch with the truth of my own life experience. This week, I have dropped into strength as a sensation of stillness and groundedness as much as a feeling of bracing myself for an "attack." I have softened into courage as an act of taking fear by the hand and caressing trembles with my breath and comforting words - assurances of safety. I know that bravery, for me, can be letting tears flow and phoning a friend for support. And what I have discovered most deeply is the courage to protect and guard my inner peace. I am having glimpses of "brave tranquility." What are strength, courage and bravery for you?

A whole other question is how we be strong for each other. How do we uplift each other in strength, courage and bravery? To me, strength as a global archetype is the one of the guardian and protector of the vulnerable. It's also the archetype that recognizes the impact and consequence of trauma and oppression. How do exert our power and influence in protection and the survival of those who have been disempowered and oppressed? That may be an entirely different embodied exploration - it's a big one and we are all in the moment together right now. We are embodying it, collectively, in real time.  I am drawing ideas from our Lioness dance where we take our place of power and responsibility in service to the survival of our pride (not personal pride, but the community/family of cubs, lions, and lionesses in our care)

Much of us will be experiencing a heatwave over the next few days - it's happening here in North Carolina too. Take care of yourselves and each other.

Can't wait to see you all in our virtual space this weekend and next week,
Jennifer

Reminder! Summer Schedule -
For the Summer, I will teach Somos Luceros on Sundays at 10AM PDT and Somatic Yoga-Dance on Tuesdays at 4PM PDT.

A reminder that I am taking Saturdays off this Summer.

Dance with Janice on Saturdays!

For those of you interested in a Saturday 10AM PDT Zoom class, I highly recommend Janice Steinberg's Nia classes! She is one of our beloved Somos Luceros community members and I dance with her whenever I can. I love her classes and know you will too.

This Saturday, August 14 at 10AM PDT, Janice is teaching her routine Fifa (Peace) to the music Angelique Kidjo. Inner peace is a core aspect of Strength so while I am guiding the ArcanaDance workshop at the same time, Janice will be guiding this simultaneous expression of strength through peace :).

To join Janice's Saturday Nia classes (10AM PDT), email her to get on her mailing list. She sends the Zoom link for class via email on the day of class. And like my classes, Janice's classes are donation-based as well.

Somos Luceros

Our weekend classes are called Somos Luceros.

Somos Luceros is a somatic dance practice designed to illuminate the wisdom of your body and cultivate deep embodiment of archetypal qualities that offer lightness, depth and joy. The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling, opening new chapters in our bodies where we can see and feel our most luminous potential. Release the stories in your body that weigh you down and reclaim your light. In Spanish, Somos means “we are” and Luceros means “bringers of light” or “bright stars.” This name honors my father, my paternal indigenous ancestors in South America, my heritage, and our collective oldest ancestor, the stars. We are dancing bodies of light.

With immense gratitude for your continued support,
Jennifer

Join us for the Dance of Strength: Exploring Bravery & Courage via Tarot & Movement

During this ArcanaDance™ workshop we experience the magic of using tarot, guided movement and music to summon “flexible defiance and brave tranquility” (terms from Chris-Anne Donnelly, creator of the Muse Tarot)

In the tarot, the Strength card represents the archetype of bravery. Strength is a primal call to summon our inner courage when faced with uncertainty and/or adversity.

This is the perfect archetype to explore when you are noticing that fear, doubt and perceptions of weakness are limiting and restricting your life.

Guided by the voice of Strength, we will bring a somatic infusion of fierce compassion and self-love to embolden our hearts and lives. You are so much stronger than you know!

In this workshop you will:

  • Experience a movement exploration of the qualities of Strength
  • Play with and learn from tarot
  • Discover ways you can cultivate flexible defiance and brave tranquility

No tarot or dance experience is required.

ArcanaDance™ is a fusion of tarot and movement that feels like dance therapy! Using imagery, music and guided movement prompts, ArcanaDance™ makes personal growth fun, empowering, multidimensional and transformative

Join us on this for Somos Luceros – Lioness: An Embodied Exploration of Pride, Power, Protection & Play to the music of Wiyaala

Lioness is a body of work that was initiated and choreographed by my dear friend Janice Steinberg of Nia San Diego. She and I both fell in love with the music of Wiyaala awhile back. When Janice said she was creating a routine to Wiyaala's music, I asked her if I could learn it. With her blessing I have embodied and reinterpreted Lioness for Somos Luceros.

The lioness is primarily the hunter and leader of their pride (family/community of lions, lioness’ and cubs). They are keenly aware that the survival of their pride is dependent on their skill, strength, speed, agility, courage, and grace. Unlike lions, they retain a sense of playfulness into their adulthood which makes them quite fun and creative. Their roar, used to proclaim their territory and defend their loved ones, can be heard up to two miles away. The lioness teaches us to be self-assured, caring, protective and purposeful.

Lioness is an invitation to explore and embody pride, power, protection, play and proclamation (the lioness’ roar) along with their gifts of grace, agility, strength, courage, and beauty. This body of work has brought me so much joy. I look forward to dancing it with you. And yay - it's Leo season!

The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling. You are invited to receive the choreography, bring it into your body and make it your own.

Coming Home to Ourselves Dance-Yoga Practice is a somatic dance yoga practice that brings together movement as metaphor and the expanse of yoga with the intent to guide us to deeper embodiment beyond the yoga mat. This practice is about befriending your body and reuniting with it as a sacred beloved and noticing how your mind and body work together to create harmony in your life.

The focus/theme of this class is Cultivating Courage.

For two weeks in August all of my classes will focus on embodying qualities associated with inner strength: courage, dignity, compassion, boundaries, confronting fear with kindness and curiosity, and cultivating brave tranquility. For this class, we will explore aspects of these qualities through our somatic yoga-dance practice.

This class includes simple yoga postures in dance form (alternating fluid movement and stillness), mindfulness prompts, various meditation practices, the application of mantra, mudras, and the weaving in of the rich and deep yoga philosophy that guides us into deeper levels of self-knowing and unity of mind and body.

Class is 75 minutes. Wear comfortable clothes to move in. Make sure you have a yoga mat or towel. Feel free to also have a blanket or pillow to sit on for the seated portion of class.

We do not do any weight bearing poses in these classes. This practice is truly gentle and I am working towards making yoga accessible. If you would like to see a sample class, simply email me and I will share the link and password with you.

If you are new to the language I have used above to describe class, here are some simple guiding definitions:
  • What is Movement? For this class it is body postures in motion. We will take simple yoga asanas (poses) and embody them through a dance that blends fluidity and stillness.
  • What is Mindfulness? A quality of focused awareness to the present moment and of our sensations that includes our body, mind, and emotions.
  • What is Meditation? Various experiential practices and techniques that support mindfulness and focusing our mind and body.
  • What is Mantra? A sound, word or group of words (such as affirmations) that aid in mindfulness, meditation and focusing the mind and body.
  • What is Mudra? Hand and body gestures that both ground and move energy in the body.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the class/meeting.

Here is the info to make a payment of your choice, in exchange for the class experience: I am YTT 300 certified in the Honor Yoga's Roots cohort via Ignite Yoga and Wellness Institute.

Tarot Sessions

I am scheduling sessions from early September though late-November. I will be taking the month of December off.

If you would like to get on my calendar for anytime between September and November 2021, get on my schedule sooner than later. There's plenty of time to schedule but my calendar does fill pretty quickly!

These sessions are my lifeblood and I so appreciate your continued support in scheduling appointments and referring your loved ones and friends to me. As you know, I don't advertise. All of my client work has been via referral. For that I am immensely grateful.

To schedule a session, choose the session type at www.jenniferluceroearle.com/tarot-with-me/sessions and email me your questionnaire.

Tarot Consultation Packages
There are several tarot packages to choose from, including options for multiple one hour to two hour sessions throughout a one year window.

Huge thanks to Brooke Lowe Johnson for the photo (top) above!
I asked my young nephew for a courage anthem. He didn't skip a beat and sent me a link to this song you will recognize from the film The Greatest Showman and from our Somos Luceros Resurrection dance :)!

What I love most about the scene in the movie (and the song) is that it shows courage as solidarity. The character is further strengthened by support from others. There are few things more fortifying in strength and courage than knowing that someone(s) has your back.
