The Unbidden Work of Sorrow

"...sorrow carves riverbeds in our soul, deepening us as it flows in and out of our lives. There is something familiar about the rising and falling of loss, how it takes us below the surface of our lives and works on us in some alchemical way. We are remade in times of grief, broken apart and reassembled. It is hard, painful and unbidden work. No one goes in search of loss; rather, it finds us and reminds us of the temporary gift we have been given, these few sweet breaths we call life." - Francis Weller

Over the next two days I am putting the final touches on this Saturdays workshop "Honoring Transitions: A Tarot Workshop with the Death Card." As I was exploring the resources I have in my home (books, music, tarot decks) I came across an e-book I'd bought last year titled "The Wild Edge of Sorrow." This book is where I found the passage quoted above.

I was talking with a friend earlier this week about how I have both held and shed layers of sorrow and grief. At the time I experienced each layer, I knew for sure that I did not go searching for these losses nor did I see them as an ingredient for alchemy. Now, with some distance, I see the alchemy. I see how each loss broke me open, remade and reassembled me. What I wish I had during those times was the permission to grieve bravely in the company of others who were also grieving. Nope, as I told my friend, I had a habit of suffering in isolation and didn't dare "burden" anyone with my wailing "darkness."

My desire, through this workshop, is to create the space for a collective honoring of loss and the transition that Death represents from what was to what may be, but is yet unformed. The way I've learned to do this, for better or worse in isolation, is through the ritual of movement. I am so excited for Saturday. I am excited to bring the shadow of Death into the light of deep embodied honest and raw feeling. Because without this emotional journey, there can be no alchemy. I will look forward to sharing an entry in a future newsletter about our learnings through this workshop.
