Create Your Day, Then Create Your Life

“Our consciousness is programmed. We see things a certain way from a young age - we're programmed to keep doing them that way. Then you have to spend adulthood learning how to overcome it, to read out the programs.

Try to create. I want to tell people to create.
Just start by creating your day.
Then create your life.”

- Prince, The Beautiful Ones

November 11, 2021

Deep bow today to our Veteran’s Day, for their service, care and devotion to this country we call home.

This will be a brief newsletter. It has been a truly indescribable week. In my somatic therapy training, we are exploring an aspect of life called the death layer. We’ve been guided on a truly gentle process where we identify moments in our lives when, in many respects, we disconnected from our life force energy after a deep need for connection and care were not met. That process alone has been challenging and then this week one of my best friend’s faced death and was revived.

I have absolutely no words to describe how the past few days but I felt both the resiliency and fragility of life at once. I am so deeply grateful that she is here - alive and healing. She will tell her story someday and with her blessing I will share it with you. For now, I am just humbled and awed by the power of her spirit, the incredible medical technology and team that saved her life, and the generous and expansive community that prayed for (and continues to) her.

The quote above is from the memoir Prince never had a chance to complete - The Beautiful Ones. I love that he’s inviting us to question what we know and what we do, to unlearn/deprogram and awaken our creativity - to dare to do something new and different that stretches and expands, if not defies, what we’ve learned. I love his prompt to initiate the creative spark with one day, this day - and trust that one step to ripple out into all of our life. Every day we are alive is a chance to create something.

This Sunday, one of my dearest friends and our Somos Luceros community member, Dafney, has requested to dance to our Prince playlist for her birthday on Sunday. Of course I said yes - I am thrilled to celebrate her in community - she is such a light in my world!

We know Prince’s catalogue of music is extensive and this particular playlist includes many of his popular songs so that you can sing along if you’d like. But the invitation is to listen with new ears and create a new experience of embodiment, movement and expression for yourself. If you get stuck, ask yourself, what would Prince do?

This upcoming Wednesday, in Somatic Yoga Dance, we are continuing our exploration of the Gunas (from Ayurveda) - three energies found in all of nature and in our human experience can be felt as:
- Tamas as heaviness and withdrawal from experience,
- Rajas as energy and engagement, and
- Sattva as harmony and joy.
I wasn't able to teach this class yesterday so I am looking forward to revisiting this theme and re-exploring these three energies within myself.

Taking a break in December
A reminder that there are two more weeks of classes remaining before I take December off to go to New York and caretake for my beloved sister-in-law as she undergoes cancer care treatment. Classes will then resume in January. And another reminder that tarot sessions will also be on break in December and I have only 1 or 2 spots remaining this month and am scheduling into mid-to-late January.

Gift certificates:

Several of you have asked - Yes, I have both paper-based and digital gift certificates for tarot sessions. If you would like to gift someone a reading for the holidays ahead, please be sure to email me before November 26th so that I have time to send them to you before I leave for New York.

Deeply grateful for this community,
Jennifer

Schedule Going Forward:
  • Somos Luceros on Sundays at 10AM PDT and
Saturdays at 10AM ONCE per month
  • Somatic Yoga-Dance on Wednesdays at 4PM PDT.
  • ArcanaDance on specific Saturdays - next one TBA

Somos Luceros

Somos Luceros is a somatic dance practice designed to illuminate the wisdom of your body and cultivate deep embodiment of archetypal qualities that offer lightness, depth and joy. The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling, opening new chapters in our bodies where we can see and feel our most luminous potential. Release the stories in your body that weigh you down and reclaim your light. In Spanish, Somos means “we are” and Luceros means “bringers of light” or “bright stars.” This name honors my father, my paternal indigenous ancestors in South America, my heritage, and our collective oldest ancestor, the stars. We are dancing bodies of light.

With immense gratitude for your continued support,
Jennifer

Join us for Dance Freedom of Expression (to the music of Prince) in celebration of Dafney’s birthday!

“Just start by creating your day. Then create your life.” – Prince

Prince left a legacy defined by endless creativity. Our theme for this class is Freedom of Expression. Prince once said in an interview, “When I first started out in the music industry, I was most concerned with freedom. Freedom to produce, freedom to play all the instruments on my records, freedom to say anything I wanted to…” He proceeded, mostly uncompromisingly, towards that freedom. He both defied and transcended genres and “norm” expectations – in music, songwriting and arrangement, gender expression, art, and as a persona.

At the request of Dafney for her birthday, this weekend, we celebrate Prince’s legacy of creativity by dancing to select popular songs of his and the invitation he gave us to embrace and live freedom of expression. Prepare to move your hips, gyrate, belt out some lyrics, and set yourself expression free.

The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling. You are invited to receive the choreography, bring it into your body and make it your own – and break “the rules!”

Coming Home to Ourselves Dance-Yoga Practice is a somatic dance yoga practice that brings together movement as metaphor and the expanse of yoga with the intent to guide us to deeper embodiment beyond the yoga mat.

This practice is about befriending your body and reuniting with it as a sacred beloved and noticing how your mind and body work together to create harmony in your life.

The focus of this class is transitioning with self-awareness of our interior orientation.

A foundation of both yoga and ayurveda is a school of thought called Samkhya philosophy. This philosophy helps us understand our own human behavior with the gunas, the basic qualities and attributes that inform the nature of all of life. The three gunas are tamas, rajas and sattva. There are so many expressions and layers to each of the gunas.

For our class we will explore just a few of these qualities and how they influence our inner orientation to our lived experience: Tamas as heaviness and withdrawal from experience, rajas as energy and engagement, and sattva as harmony and joy.

In this class we will transition to and from each guna, anchored in self-awareness of how each one influences how we orient to our movements through life.

Class is 75 minutes. Wear comfortable clothes to move in. Make sure you have a yoga mat or towel. Feel free to also have a blanket or pillow to sit on for the seated portion of class.

If you are new to the language I have used above to describe class, here are some simple guiding definitions:
  • What is Movement? For this class it is body postures in motion. We will take simple yoga asanas (poses) and embody them through a dance that blends fluidity and stillness.
  • What is Mindfulness? A quality of focused awareness to the present moment and of our sensations that includes our body, mind, and emotions.
  • What is Meditation? Various experiential practices and techniques that support mindfulness and focusing our mind and body.
  • What is Mantra? A sound, word or group of words (such as affirmations) that aid in mindfulness, meditation and focusing the mind and body.
  • What is Mudra? Hand and body gestures that both ground and move energy in the body.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the class/meeting.

Here is the info to make a payment of your choice, in exchange for the class experience: I am YTT 300 certified in the Honor Yoga's Roots cohort via Ignite Yoga and Wellness Institute.

Dance with Janice on Saturdays!

For those of you interested in a Saturday 10AM PDT Zoom class, I highly recommend Janice Steinberg's Nia classes! She is one of our beloved Somos Luceros community members and I dance with her whenever I can. I love her classes and know you will too.

This Saturday, November 13 at 10AM PDT, Janice is teaching Joyful Noise with a focus on opening the throat chakra—and strengthening the ability to speak our truth—by singing, squawking, yelling, making nonsense sounds, etc.

To join Janice's Saturday Nia classes (10AM PDT), email her to get on her mailing list. She sends the Zoom link for class via email on the day of class. And like my classes, Janice's classes are donation-based as well.

Mary Lenox's Poetry

Following is the poem Mary wrote and shared with us after class this past Sunday, November 7. This poem took on an entire new dimension for me this week - as the week progressed - thanking every new day indeed <3

Glory! Glory!

Glory! Glory!

I awaken to the quiet calm
Chirping birds in the distance
Call through the chilly atmosphere

Soft rippling waves of bay waters
Gently kiss the sandy shore
Then continue onward in swirls of change

I did not see the sunrise
Beyond the heavy haze
Yet

Sparse light appeared
Amid the dimness
Like an unfinished dream

Glory!
Glory!
Hallelujah!

A new day to say
Thank you!
Thank you!

Prince "Starfish and Coffee" with the Muppets

The last time I taught our Prince playlist (February 14, 2021), Dafney reminded me of the time Prince sang Starfish and Coffee on the Muppets. It brings me joy every time I see it. Enjoy these 2 minutes <3

"If you set your mind free, baby..." Yet another invitation to be in the creative zone!
