Breathing new Light
"When you learn to let go of things, a greater generosity, openness, and breath comes into your life."
- John O’Donohue

We are nearing the darkest day of the year.
It's been cool, dark and rainy over the past few weeks. During this time we may want to go inward, hide out under the covers and tend to our inner fire or seek out our inner light with the flashlight of our awareness. It is in these times that I have to coax myself to leave the house and the dry and warm comfort of my nest. But then I place one foot on the dance floor, turn the music up and my entire being lights up like a fireworks display. Every time I leave the house to head to dance, I practice letting go and welcoming the breath of release and restoration into my being.

Sunday, December 20:
This Sunday, December 20, we will be saying goodbye to our beautiful Nia student
and teacher, Irene Minkina, who is setting off on a new journey to a life as a post-doc
in Philadelphia. We are co-teaching the routine, Beautiful. I will miss her on multiple levels and in my sadness extending the invitation to let go and surrender to the excitement that will come from watching her breathe new life into her own being as she opens to the new life ahead of her. I learned, through my Nia training, that Joy can always sit alongside any other emotion or feeling. And so we will dance the sadness of saying goodbye alongside the Joy of gratitude for our past and future connection.

I hope you will come join us for this dance -10:30am at Balance Studio in Fremont. It will be your last class with me in 2015. I will be on the east coast visiting my fami
ly for two weeks but you are in amazing hands with Shea Marsh who will teach the 10:30am Nia classes on December 27, 2015 and January 3, 2016. I will be back to teach on Sunday, January 10, 2016. YAY!

Also this Sunday, December 20th, I am teaching the last ArcanaDance class of 2015. The Dance of the Star invites us to embody the archetype of the guiding light. The archetype asks us to explore what dims our light and then to let it go so that we can turn up the switch to shine as our brightest self. Come join me at 9:00am at Balance Studio in Fremont for The Dance of the Star.

Goodbye, Dance Space:
Along the lines of letting go and shining bright, on Saturday, December 12, the Nia teachers at The DanceSpace received noticed that all classes at the studio will be canceled starting December 20th. Nia has been in the space for 9 years. I took my first step as a Nia teacher in this space, teaching my very first class to a group of dear friends, including Dance Space teacher Gretchen Musgrove, on August 1, 2010 (photo to the right above). I had planned to return to the space in January 2016. The Dance Space wasn't just a physical place with amazing Nia teachers, it was a safe, loving, supportive, joy-filled and healing haven for our community. In letting go (forcibly), we do so with gratitude and with the openness to the brighter doors that may open for us all in this parting.

When we can't find the words, sometimes images capture best what a space has meant to a community. With well over 1,000 classes over 9 years, a growing community of teachers and countless beloved are just a few memories of our beloved Dance Space.

ArcanaDance Mini-Retreat
A Tarot Journey with the Hermit Card: Turning inward to honor the wise one within

Saturday, January 30, 10am-4pm
Cost: $110 (includes materials)
In the tarot, the Hermit card represents the archetype of the inner sage. The beginning of the year is a wonderful time for the reflection, introspection and soulful inquiry that the Hermit invites. Often we need to go inward to reflect before setting our course for the year ahead. Join me for this safe and sacred mini-retreat where we will journey to our inner sage and alchemize the wisdom of our life lessons into pearls for spiritual growth and personal development for the year ahead. We will then go on a movement odyssey, collaboratively choreographing a dance that honors and celebrates the wise one within.
