“… As it grooves, your body moves
Your body starts to get the feelin'
And what you're feelin' is happiness

… Let your body go as you listen
Let it flow to your system
It'll take control of your mind
And make you move your behind”

Thursday, November 10, 2022

I just got home from a most glorious and fun adventure in Asheville, NC. My husband and I stayed in Asheville on May 31, 2020 as a stopover on our way to Chapel Hill so we really didn't have a chance to really tour the area.

My friend Jennifer is here visiting and we decided to do a roadtrip. We called it our "Art-xtravaganza in Asheville." I am quite tired from travel but want to share that I was so inspired by the artists and artisans I met in the River Arts District. Witnessing people in their creative power and joy brings ME immense joy.

Know that I will have more to share in next week's newsletter, after a little rest, when I can string sentences together more cohesively. LOL!

Of the many photos I took over the past couple of days, the one above right is my favorite. Here I am standing beside a variety of artistic tools covering a house...securing a foundation for the blossoming of my colorful and bold self-expression :)

Oh and if you are wondering about the quote in the header...it's a teaser for our class this Sunday. The song is not part of our playlist but the sentiment - wiggle it - IS a core part of our movement exploration. One of my favorite house music songs in my late teen years, Wiggle It (Just a Little Bit) never failed to make this boogie down Bronx girl giggle and wiggle.

Last weekend we explored Relaxed & Fluid Power: An Embodied Exploration of our Synovial & Intercellular Fluids - this Sunday we are focusing on Relaxed Power and giving our full and undivided attention to the synovial fluid Shake Your Soul movement repertoire (Leven Institute).

Classes in the week ahead - Sunday November 13 at 10:00AM PST and Wednesday November 16 at 9AM PDT.

Deeply grateful for this community,
Jennifer

Somos Luceros

Somos Luceros is a somatic dance practice designed to illuminate the wisdom of your body and cultivate deep embodiment of archetypal qualities that offer lightness, depth and joy. The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling, opening new chapters in our bodies where we can see and feel our most luminous potential. Release the stories in your body that weigh you down and reclaim your light. In Spanish, Somos means “we are” and Luceros means “bringers of light” or “bright stars.” This name honors my father, my paternal indigenous ancestors in South America, my heritage, and our collective oldest ancestor, the stars. We are dancing bodies of light.

With immense gratitude for your continued support,
Jennifer

Join us for Shake It Out and Let it Go: An Embodied Dance Exploration of Relaxed Power

This class is a fusion of Somos Luceros and the synovial fluid movement repertoire from Shake Your Soul (Leven Institute).

Power is energy and the fluid systems in our bodies provide us with different qualities of energy that allow us to express our power in a variety of ways.

Synovial fluid is the fluid between our joints. When our joints are lubricated, flexible and relaxed, there can be easy smooth flow throughout our body.

Relaxed power can be unfamiliar territory for many of us, especially if we are accustomed to seeing power as visibly muscled, assertive, rigid, uncompromising and perhaps inflexible. We may also notice that the fear of losing our power makes us clench, hold, and tighten.

Relaxed power allows us to feel calmness and comfort while exuding a self-trust in how we move through the world. There is no worry about getting it “wrong”/making a mistake, exerting control, or holding on tightly. This type of power invites us to be grounded and in our center while also being loose, free, open, flexible, and playful.

In this class we will be invited to soften and release rigidity, tightness, clenching, and hardness in our bodies. We will wiggle, jiggle, shimmy, shake it out, let it go, and and cultivate free-flowing playful relaxation. I hope you can join us!

The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling. You are invited to receive the choreography, bring it into your body and make it your own.

Join us for Embodied Movement Explorations for Body Wisdom and Wellness

Body wisdom is being aware of and attuned to what our body needs to feel well. This somatic intelligence and tending can be accessed and cultivated in many ways.

Every week we will explore a variety of somatic movement practices that include somatic dance, yoga, QiGong, archetypal expression (mainly tarot), and other modalities that emphasize mindfulness and that guide self-knowing.

Classes for the months of November and December will focus on Exploring Expressions of Power.

All classes will be crafted using dance movement repertoires from Shake Your Soul (Leven Institute).

The dance movement repertoires we will embody and explore allow us to feel the power of the major fluids systems of the body: synovial, intercellular, arterial blood, venous, and cerebrospinal fluid.

Power is energy and the fluid systems in our bodies provide us with different qualities of energy that allow us to express our power in a variety of ways. In this series, the Shake Your Soul repertoires will aid us in “trying on” relaxed power, fluid power, rooted power, resilient power, and attuned power.

Class dates: November 2, 16, 23 and 30 and December 7 and 14.
*No class on Wednesday, November 9 and no classes December 21 and 28.

In this class we center the experience of living, feeling, sensing and moving in our bodies. We learn practices to know ourselves more deeply, cultivate joy, restore from stress, explore creative self-expression, and ways to nourish the various systems (fluid, muscular, skeletal, organ, nervous, and cellular) of our body.

Come to move your body, develop a deeper appreciation for the intelligence and wisdom of your body, and to learn practices to be well in mind, body, heart and soul.

Wear comfortable clothes to move in. No shoes required. Feel free to have a yoga mat, blanket or towel for floor-based practices.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the class/meeting.

Dance with Janice on Saturdays!

For those of you interested in a Saturday 10AM PDT Zoom class, I highly recommend Janice Steinberg's Nia classes! She is one of our beloved Somos Luceros community members and I dance with her whenever I can. I love her classes and know you will too.

This Saturday, November 12 at 10AM PDT,  Janice is teaching Hine Ani / Here I Am. "Hine Ani" features songs of devotion from many spiritual paths.

To join Janice's Saturday Nia classes (10AM PDT), email her to get on her mailing list. She sends the Zoom link for class via email on the day of class. And like my classes, Janice's classes are donation-based as well.

Mary Lenox's Poetry

Following is the poem, The Picture, that Mary wrote and shared with us after class on Sunday, November 6. This beautiful poem/tribute is in honor of her beloved ancestors. Praise be!

The Picture

Who are these people?
Who took a leap of faith
To journey to the "promised land."
During the great migration of African American people

Who are these people?
Defined as nobodies (by some)
Held hostage by systemic oppression, unabashed racism
Refusing to surrender their souls to the darkness of ghetto life

Who are these people?
Who found an oasis of hope
Through a fervent belief in God
And "loving thy neighbor as thyself"

Who are these people?
Courageously facing the unknown
Moment by moment
Day by day

Who are these people?
Daring to begin again
Again, again, and again through
Joys, sorrows, despair, and struggle

Who are these people?
Who inspired their children and others
To learn, to dream, to create, to grow
Regardless of obstacles and setbacks

Who are these people?
Lifting their hearts through prayer
Leaving a legacy of love, hope, courage
In homage to the divine Spirit

My ancestors!
They are a part of me!
Praise Be!
Praise Be!
