“We can fall apart and be put back together through practices that lift us up as well as by those that bring our knees to the ground.

There is a long history of people finding ways to do serious work that lightens the heart, unburdens the spirit, and makes us feel strong and powerful again because we are in something together.

These practices are not the domain of the rich or the academics; nor do they require going beyond the wisdom of our own bodies or fixing or changing ourselves.

Most importantly, they are not asking us to mask our feelings under a false smile or to ignore suffering.

The drumming, dancing, singing, music, and art used by indigenous cultures on every continent to ensure communal health are all proven by research to provide benefits that augment mental, emotional, social, and physical health and resilience.

They invite folks to to turn toward their grief and pain rather than away from it, but to do so in a way that releases and uplifts rather than overwhelms and isolates.

Such practices are reminders that we process suffering more resiliently when we know we are not alone in it, and that our bodies know the way to back to wholeness when they are allowed to express what is inside not only through words but also through the fullness of movement, sound, and creative expression.

This is the return to joy as aliveness in the body - as a connection to our whole selves.”

December 2, 2021

This Sunday I will teach my last Somos Luceros class of the year. Originally I was supposed to leave for New York this month to be of caregiving support to my sister-in-law as she undergoes treatment for cancer. The dates have now been pushed to early to mid January 2022. Even with this change of dates, I am grateful to have the coming weeks off to rest and recover from an incredibly trying year that continues to place issues of mortality, illness, and care at the forefront of my life.

One of my best childhood friends reached out to me on Thanksgiving last week and asked me how I was feeling at this time in my life. I told her that I was feeling weary. She commented that she's never known me to be weary at any stage of life. And she is right - this is a first for me. I am exhausted on many levels and am struggling to access vigor and optimism. Over the past couple of months there have been a few times when I didn't think I'd be able to even teach a class. And then I see your faces and my entire energy shifts.

When I reflect on the practices that have lifted me up, even as I have felt myself drawn to collapse, it's absolutely been community, relationship, and creative expression. I don't know where I would have been this year without our dances (Somos Luceros, Yoga-Dance, and ArcanaDance). Last week I burst into tears while teaching. That's how safe and comfortable I feel in this community. I did not feel alone in my sadness. I did not feel compelled to mask my feelings or ignore my suffering. The boxes on the Zoom screen could never replace the feeling of being in physical space with others but it's helped ensure my own access to communal health, community comfort, and joyful resilience.

So once again, I thank you for continuing to show up for these online classes. Like you, I look forward to the days when we can gather in person. I am still eager to find local connections and perhaps that will unfold in 2022. Until then know that, after this Sunday, I will be taking a much needed break to mend my energy and be sure that I have the reserves to be the loving caretaker that my sister-in-law will need as she goes through radiation treatment. And I will look forward to us dancing together again on Sunday, January 2, 2022 :D.

Requests for 2022:
As we enter a new year, I'd love to invite you to send me requests for classes. This past year our themes included: emotional resilience, versatility, hope faith & healing, liminality, collective joy, aliveness, home, resurrection (liberation from judgment), freedom of expression, self-care, courage, valor, change, rest, wisdom, and thankfulness. What are some themes you would like to explore through embodiment movement in 2022? Whatever you suggest, know that you will not be alone in your process of exploration and discovery - we will be in this together and because Somos Luceros - we embody light not only for ourselves but we hold the light for each other <3.

Last classes of the year:
Our last Somatic Yoga-Dance class was held this past Wednesday. Classes will resume on Wednesday. January 5, 2022. To rent a previously recorded class, click here.

Our last Somos Luceros class of the year will be held this Sunday, December 5, 2021 at 10AM PST. We are bringing back abuela's dance. I can't think of a better way to close out the year of classes than to honor my abuela with all of you.

I am offering a special two-hour ArcanaDance workshop on New Year's Eve - Friday, December 31, 2021 from 9AM - 11AM PST. Join us for ArcanaDance™ Dance to Release & Welcome: Transitioning to a New Year with Tarot & Movement (via Zoom).

Somos Luceros

Somos Luceros is a somatic dance practice designed to illuminate the wisdom of your body and cultivate deep embodiment of archetypal qualities that offer lightness, depth and joy. The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling, opening new chapters in our bodies where we can see and feel our most luminous potential. Release the stories in your body that weigh you down and reclaim your light. In Spanish, Somos means “we are” and Luceros means “bringers of light” or “bright stars.” This name honors my father, my paternal indigenous ancestors in South America, my heritage, and our collective oldest ancestor, the stars. We are dancing bodies of light.

With immense gratitude for your continued support,
Jennifer

Join us for the last Somos Luceros class of the year with Vamos a Gozar: Shake Your Hips to Abuela’s Dance!

Immensely grateful to share that abuela is still with us. She is approaching 103.5 and every day is a gift and a blessing. I cannot think of a better way to close out this year of classes than to celebrate the strength of her spirit, body and heart by revisiting her annual birthday dance.

Vamos a gozar translates to “let’s enjoy.” One of my abuela’s favorite phrases, it captures her spirit and life motto so perfectly. She loves nothing more than to gather with people and have fun. For over 100 years she’s moved with a self-assured relaxed easy stride swaying her hips in a flowing skirt. It is a gloriously hypnotic sight. Abuela would want us to dance in joy and enjoyment, and to shake our hips with playful abandon and confidence. Let’s do it!

The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling. You are invited to receive the choreography, bring it into your body and make it your own.

Dance with Janice on Saturdays!

For those of you interested in a Saturday 10AM PDT Zoom class, I highly recommend Janice Steinberg's Nia classes! She is one of our beloved Somos Luceros community members and I dance with her whenever I can. I love her classes and know you will too.

This Saturday, December 4 at 10AM PDT, Janice is teaching her Light Up the World playlist. I got to dance with her to this fabulous routine on Monday night!

To join Janice's Saturday Nia classes (10AM PDT), email her to get on her mailing list. She sends the Zoom link for class via email on the day of class. And like my classes, Janice's classes are donation-based as well.

Mary Lenox's Poetry

Following is the poem Mary wrote and shared with us after our Dancing Thankfulness class this past Sunday, November 28. As always, it was divine timing!

Born Again

I thought I’d never see them again
Those wild weeds clinging to earth with tiny golden yellow blossoms reaching for holy light

Yet,
There they were
In the quiet calm of morn
Seemingly dead on yesterday
now born again like the mythological phoenix

I whispered a prayer
Oh
May I remember to remember
The gift of new life rises
From the ashes of change

Try Everything by Shakira

Earlier this week in my Somatic Therapy supervision session one of my colleagues started singing Try Everything in response to a story I was sharing about feeling afraid to make mistakes, especially when it comes to this serious therapy work! Our mentor offered caring reassurance to embrace the art of making "mistakes" and trying again and again.

I ended up belting out the song with my colleague - remembering the lyrics by heart and in gratitude that our Somos Luceros and Yoga-Dance community member Peih Chiang submitted this song for our Collective Joy playlist.

So here it is y'all - if you are feeling down and need some joyful resilience to keep on going  -- turn the volume up and start singing and dancing :).

Excerpt:

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
I messed up tonight
I lost another fight
Lost to myself, but I'll just start again

I keep falling down
I keep on hitting the ground
But I always get up now to see what's next

Birds don't just fly
They fall down and get up
Nobody learns without getting it wrong

I won't give up
No, I won't give in till I reach the end
And then I'll start again
No, I won't leave
I want to try everything
I want to try even though I could fail

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Try everything

Look how far you've come
You filled your heart with love
Baby, you've done enough
Take a deep breath

Don't beat yourself up
No need to run so fast
Sometimes we come last, but we did our best

I'll keep on making those new mistakes
I'll keep on making them every day
Those new mistakes
