There is always light in the darkness
"Along the way, the pain of living can make us identify with the container—our body, our circumstance, our way in the world—and not the life-force that moves through us. When our body is broken, we only know ourselves as broken. When our circumstance is torn, we only know ourselves as torn. When our way in the world feels uncertain, we only know ourselves as uncertain and confused. But our enduring identity resides in our kinship with the life-force or Spirit that moves through us, and not in what is done to the container."

What It Means To Be Awake

I just returned from a deeply cathartic and restorative retreat with a group of beautiful, strong, and resilient women. Together, we journeyed with the Dark Goddess, created art, shared deeply vulnerable stories, laughed, wept, wailed, danced, sang and loved one another fiercely.

There's truly nothing like being held safely in community - it heals. We need more safe circles for people to weep, wail, embrace, sing, laugh, dance and love one another. These times call for fierce loving. My heart has been tender since returning and watching the anger, hate, and senseless violence on the news and across social media. At least for myself, I know that now is the time to practice staying connected to love and trusting that the meandering dark will lead me to the light that never goes out, deep in my center.

I took the photo above at Double Bluff Beach on Whidbey Island on Friday morning. After two weeks of working with the shadow, I was moved to find a visual reminder, in nature, that there is always light in the darkness.

Come dance with me this week as classes resume at Embrace the Moon tomorrow evening, Thursday, September 22 at 6:00pm. Tomorrow is the autumn equinox, let's celebrate the changing of the seasons and honor the balance of darkness and light with our dance.
