“Play keeps us vital and alive.
It gives us an enthusiasm for life that is irreplaceable.
Without it, life just doesn't taste good”

As I sat down to write this newsletter I got a weather alert on my phone. We have a Tropical Storm Warning and are expecting 40-60 MPH winds within the next 36 hours. This is what I get for conjuring the wind through Danza del Viento - LOL! I love the dance and am excited that we will explore it again this Sunday, October 2. If you join us on Sunday, feel free to dance with a lightweight scarf, shawl, pillow case or even some dish towels. It's so much fun to feel and see the "wind" move these fabrics as we imitate the various forms of dancing winds with our bodies.
Since we have a storm coming, I have to keep this newsletter quite brief so that we can go and get necessary grocery items in prep for hunkering down at home.
My birthday month begins this Saturday and y'all know by now that I celebrate the entire month :D This past year ended up feeling a lot heavier than I had hoped. And that is ok. That said, I crave lightness and levity and the Danza del Viento is offering an exploration of lightness of body. To nurture some levity, our October Embodied Movement Explorations (EME) for Body Wisdom and Wellness classes will focus on Play this month. I am bringing out the Nia "Dance as Play" routine I shared with you all in August of 2020 and will be revisiting it anew as we blend it with the tarot cards of the Fool and the elemental four Pages (Swords, Pentacles, Cups, and Wands). Each EME class in October will be a playful exploration of one element. There is no class on Wednesday, October 26 but not to worry - I will teach Dance as Play for Somos Luceros on Sunday, October 23.
Every time I surrender to play I not only feel better, I am also much more generative. Ideas flow easily. Inspiration feels effortless. Everything looks brighter, clearer, more hopeful and magical. Productivity takes a backseat to flow. I feel alive. Joy feels tangible. And, I feel much more connected to my spirit. Play is pure enjoyment. So that's our collective task in classes for October - simple uninhibited and occasionally downright silly enjoyment! Who's in? :)
Classes in the week ahead - Sunday at 10:00AM PDT and Wednesday at 9AM PDT
Deeply grateful for this community,
Jennifer
Schedule Going Forward:
- Somos Luceros on Sundays at 10AM PDT
- Embodied Movement Explorations in Body Wisdom & Wellness on Wednesdays at 9AM PDT
- ArcanaDance - next workshop TBA
Somos Luceros
Somos Luceros is a somatic dance practice designed to illuminate the wisdom of your body and cultivate deep embodiment of archetypal qualities that offer lightness, depth and joy. The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling, opening new chapters in our bodies where we can see and feel our most luminous potential. Release the stories in your body that weigh you down and reclaim your light. In Spanish, Somos means “we are” and Luceros means “bringers of light” or “bright stars.” This name honors my father, my paternal indigenous ancestors in South America, my heritage, and our collective oldest ancestor, the stars. We are dancing bodies of light.
With immense gratitude for your continued support,
Jennifer

Join us for the Danza del Viento: An Embodied Exploration of Dancing with the Winds of Change
Winds are a sign or signal to us that a change is coming. We can feel this in our bodies. They advise us to hold steady and to also yield and bend. Sometimes they are the push needed to let go, to uproot, to fly, to soar or to seek shelter.
In this dance, we are invited to explore dancing with winds of change. Together we will fly, soar, glide, become whirlwinds and soft breezes.
We play with embodying different types of winds: those that uproot us, take us off balance, lift us higher, support our glide across to a new plane of experience, allow us to swirl and ride through its blusters, currents and gusts, a refreshing breeze, and winds that usher in a fresh new beginning.
This embodied exploration is a loving template to assist us when we feel change afoot in our lives.
The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling. You are invited to receive the choreography, bring it into your body and make it your own.

Join us for Embodied Movement Explorations for Body Wisdom and Wellness
Body wisdom is being aware of and attuned to what our body needs to feel well. This somatic intelligence and tending can be accessed and cultivated in many ways.
Every week we will explore a variety of somatic movement practices that include somatic dance, yoga, QiGong, archetypal expression (mainly tarot), and other modalities that emphasize mindfulness and that guide self-knowing.
Classes for the month of October will focus on Cultivating the Spirit of Play.
Our guiding tarot cards for this October series of classes are the Fool and the four Pages (court/people cards).
In the tarot, the Fool is the archetype of the seeker and teaches us the art of wonder, exploration, and play.
The four Pages (Air/Swords, Earth/Pentacles, Water/Cups, and Fire/Wands) are the learners, seekers, and students of their suit/element.
Join us as we explore bringing the spirit of wonder, exploration and play into each elemental expression - air, earth, water and fire - through dance!
Note: Classes will be held on Wednesdays, October 5, 12, and 19, 2022. No class on October 26.
In this class we center the experience of living, feeling, sensing and moving in our bodies. We learn practices to know ourselves more deeply, cultivate joy, restore from stress, explore creative self-expression, and ways to nourish the various systems (fluid, muscular, skeletal, organ, nervous, and cellular) of our body.
Come to move your body, develop a deeper appreciation for the intelligence and wisdom of your body, and to learn practices to be well in mind, body, heart and soul.
Wear comfortable clothes to move in. No shoes required. Feel free to have a yoga mat, blanket or towel for floor-based practices.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the class/meeting.

Mary Lenox's Poetry

Following is the poem, Autumn Morn, that Mary wrote and shared with us after class this past Sunday, September 25. As always, the poem reflected our dance. Mary's words are pure magic and medicine for the body, heart, mind and spirit.
Autumn Morn
I awakened with a heart of gratitude
Grateful for a new day of fresh gifts
Like those luminous billows
Amid autumn sky
I whispered a prayer of thanks
For the breath of life
Refreshing body, mind, and spirit
With a soft, soothing autumn breeze
I listened to the rhythmic tones of the sea
Resounding a symphony of harmony
As white-capped waves cycled to shore
In the endless dance of change
I smiled
Savoring the blessing of morning glory
Welcoming me
To the haven of peace.

CIIS Public Programs: On Navigating Change with Stillness and Presence with Octavia Raheem and Deanna Jimenez
"Join somatic and transpersonal psychotherapist Deanna Jimenez for a conversation with Octavia on how slowing down, stillness, and deeper connection to our own transitions empowers us to move through personal and collective shifts with more grace as well as what it means to navigate change with presence and courage."
I listened to this podcast episode on Sunday morning before teaching Danza del Viento. I really appreciated being guided through a stillness and rest practice and especially the conversation about the scaffolding required to slow down and access stillness.
To summarize, the suggestion is to:
1. Practice noticing and becoming more aware of the pace with which you’re moving at.
2. Get actively curious - for a day or a week simply notice how you move (pace) and don't change anything.
3. Then, intentionally slow down in ONE way in your life.
That's how we move towards slowing down and stillness. One small change/shift at a time.
For me, navigating change is so much easier when I slow down and am really present with myself and the moment. Otherwise I can reflexively resist or jump into change too quickly.
The transcript of the episode is here: https://www.ciispod.com/octavia-raheem-transcript
