"By design, arms and hands are designed to reach out and draw in, moving energy into and away from the center of the body: the spine. The spine is the first structure formed in the mother's womb—and from the spine, all other limbs are birthed. Why is this important to think about? When movement originates from the spine, our limbs have the support they need to move in their full range with power, ease and efficiency. Ultimately, this means we move better and experience more overall comfort and pleasure."
- Debbie Rosas, co-creator and founder of Nia
This week our focus in all three Nia classes is the spine. I love visualizing the spine as a flower stem and our upper extremities (hands, arms and shoulders) like leaves and petals that unfurl, reach out and rise up to the light.
I mentioned at the end of class this past Sunday that my favorite show as a little girl in the 1970's was a PBS New York children's show titled "The Magic Garden
." I was a child with a vivid imagination so I'd move my spine, hands and head to create the feeling of being a flower - um, can you say Nia is in my blood?!
As promised, here's a short clip of the opening credits of the show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-q-7WG7CRA&list=RDPFauw9YnkD0&index=3
Let's all be flowers this week! Or, better yet, let's have a glorious spring love affair with our spine!
First, with Vibe
on Tuesday and Sexi
on Thursday and Sunday.
There's also time to drop in and join us for the remaining two classes for ArcanaDance: The Dance of Liberation: A Somatic Exploration of Personal Freedom
. The first two classes were powerful explorations of confinement and our relationship to the foundation in our lives. Our mantra has been, "everything in life is intended to evolve and we can't evolve if we insist on maintaining the status quo."
This series is not lighthearted. It's deep, rich and profound. In the tarot, the Tower is the archetype of liberation and is the portal to enlightenment - the kind of experience that raises our consciousness about what is true and purposeful in our lives. The last two classes are:
- Sunday, April 9, 9:00am at Balance Studio - The False Self Revealed
- Sunday, April 16 (yes, Easter), 9:00am at Balance Studio - Truth, Awakened
Classes this week:
Note about Nia on Tuesday, April 10:
Jason Alan Griffin
is joining us for class on Tuesday, April 10! Jason is NiaSeattle's Community Communicator and has launched the Nia Visibility Project where he plans to visit Nia teachers in the Seattle area, take photos and video of our classes in action and share them on social media. Come to class on April 10 and help us get the word out about Nia in Seattle!
Classes on Easter Sunday, April 16:
YES, I am teaching both ArcanaDance at 9:00am and Nia at 10:30am. Come hop-dance with me!
My dear friend and tarot colleague, Carolyn Cushing of Soul Path Sanctuary
, and I are co-facilitating a workshop that bridges tarot and embodiment practices at the annual tarot gathering in NYC later this month. We co-wrote a three-part article and I created a short video to introduce ArcanaDance in the context of the article.
Please enjoy my first effort at bringing ArcanaDance to video. More to come! https://vimeo.com/210708897
